Powered by a 260-horsepower turbo 2.0-litre “four”, the Cobalt SS coupe promises to deliver track-proven performance combined with driving refinement and premium equipment.

And it’s all combined into one package available from an MSRP of $24,995. The Cobalt SS comes standard with air conditioning, side-impact air bags, Pioneer sound system, remote keyless entry, GM’s StabiliTrak stability control system, and OnStar.

SS-specific features include unique exterior treatment with front upper and lower grilles inlaid with diamond-mesh, rockers, body side badging and bright exhaust tip. The inside is also differentiated from those of lesser Cobalts through the use of SS-embroidered sport seats with suede-like Ultralux inserts, unique gauge cluster, A-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and specific shifter arrangement (the SS comes only with a five-speed manual).

Popular options include a sunroof ($1,100), high-wing spoiler ($275) and a limited-slip differential ($645).

Offered exclusively with a five-speed manual transmission, it is also an efficient performer, delivering an estimated 6.6 L/100km in highway driving – the best among top competitors.

The Cobalt SS reportedly delivers a quick 0-100km time of approximately 5.7 seconds, and if that run includes some turns, the SS can also sustain lateral grip of 0.9 g. This combination enabled the Cobalt SS to set a new class record on Germany’s famed Nürburgring, with a time of eight minutes, 22.85 seconds. Yet, the combination of the Ecotec 2.0L four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual accounts for a reported highway economy of 6.6 litres per 100 km.

An all-new FE5 Sport suspension - with specific stabilizer bars, spring rates and damper tuning - keeps handling stable and ride firm. Driver-selectable modes help maximize performance for the street or the track.

Four-wheel disc brakes, with standard ABS, bring the Cobalt SS to a halt efficiently and surely. The front brakes are from Brembo and have a performance-based, fixed-calliper design to resist fade better than floating calliper designs; the rear discs are vented for better heat dissipation. Twin-five-spoke 18-inch forged aluminum wheels and performance 225/40 Continental summer tires are standard.
