Mercedes utes are green with Bluetec

MANCHESTER VILLAGE, Vt. – It was no accident that Mercedes-Benz picked Vermont for the worldwide launch of its 2009 Bluetec diesel SUVs.

First, this is “The Green Mountain State” with all the eco-friendly vibes that slogan inspires. Second, Vermont is one of a seven U.S. states to adopt California’s strict tolerances for tailpipe emissions.

Mercedes-Benz is touting these three new SUVs as the world’s cleanest diesel automobiles – the first certified for sale in all 50 U.S. states plus Canada. But there are a few dark clouds on the horizon – and it wasn’t just the heavy rain clouds that hung over automotive journalists on the Canadian wave of the launch.

Just down the highway from this quaint old village, with its impeccably maintained 18th century wooden houses, is a gas station with a sign bearing bad news for modern American motorists.

The sign reads: “Diesel $4.99.9.” Ouch. That’s per U.S. gallon, or about 3.79 litres. In Canada, of course, the news is even worse as the price of diesel fuel approaches $1.50 per litre, thanks in part to soaring demand in Europe, where, depending on the country, diesels now account for 70% to 90% of new car sales.

So are these new SUVs the right vehicles at the wrong time?

Peter Werner, Mercedes-Benz senior manager of diesel engine development, says no, calling them, “A positive step in the right direction even if everyone doesn’t think so in these times.”

He says the price of diesel fuel is only part of the equation and that “Blue is the new Green” since these next-generation diesels now are as clean as gasoline engines.

Here’s how that came to pass.

Because of the sulphur-free diesel fuel that was legislated into use by Canada and the U.S. in 2006, untreated emissions are already much lower than previous levels. The catalytic converter further minimizes carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC). A particulate filter reduces soot by up to 98%.

In North America, special emphasis has been placed on reducing nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions and the Bluetec cuts these to 0.14 grams per mile. To achieve this, Mercedes-Benz has created technology it calls AdBlue injection. Are you ready for a short explanation of how this works? Take a deep breath and relax, it’s not that hard.

The AdBlue system uses an aqueous urea solution that is injected into the exhaust flow after it has passed through the catalytic converter and particulate filter, converting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water. The AdBlue reservoir holds 28 litres and is mounted on the underside of the chassis, where the spare tire normally is carried. (Because of this, the Bluetec SUVs are equipped with all-season run-flat tires.) The AdBlue container must be refilled every second service interval. If it is not, the engine will be immobilized.

The vehicles

Made in Alabama, the 2009 ML320, GL320 and R320 will be available with the same 3.0-litre V6 diesel that has powered the E320 Bluetec sedan for the past two years. Named one of Ward’s 10 best world engines and World Green engine for 2007, it generates 210 hp at 3,400 rpm and 400 lb. ft. of torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm.

Of the trio, the ML 320 has been given the most extensive facelift, inside and out. It’s also the most popular (and least expensive) of the three with 2008 prices for previous generation CDI models starting at $61,400. So we’ll concentrate on it for the rest of the story.

On the outside, the ML 320 gets new headlamps and wheels, a new larger grille, bigger rearview mirrors and a newly designed rear bumper. On the inside, there’s a new steering wheel with paddle shifters, optional two-tone leather upholstery, a new rear seat entertainment system with screens in the front seat headrests and a 610-watt harman/kardon LOGIC 7 sound system with 12 speakers.

The cabin is not only luxurious, but extremely quiet. When standing outside next to the hood with the engine running you may hear some typical diesel clatter, but on the inside all is serene.

Coupled to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the Bluetec is smooth and extremely powerful, with the kind of torque only a diesel engine can generate. Mercedes-Benz claims 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.6 seconds.

In a good mix of driving on country roads, in-town traffic and on high speed Interstates, we never saw our fuel economy drop below 8.7 L/100 km.

The ride was smooth on the standard 19-inch tires, the cabin was quiet and directions from the optional navigation system were clear and precise.

For 2009 the M-Class SUVs will be available in the summer of 2008 with three gasoline-powered versions – the ML350, ML550 and ML63 AMG. The ML 320 Bluetec isn’t expected to be on dealers’ lots until October 2008, with pricing yet to be announced.
