Dodge Rams ahead in dwindling pickup market

Dodge has a new pickup line and has raised the bar considerably.

The 2009 Ram has been completely redone but still retains the outward appearance of toughness wrapped around a new interior with a truckload of new safety and tech systems.

It’s also the debut of Dodge’s first crew cab model, a segment it hasn’t played in before (Chrysler apparently doesn’t count the Mega Cab from the previous generation).

On the outside, the grille has been tilted forward slightly and all the ugly front end gaps of earlier Rams have been eliminated. That alone, is a huge improvement.

At the other end of HEMI-powered Rams, dual exhausts are integrated into the rear bumper, the tailgate locks and trailer wiring is integrated into the rear bumper. Again, gaps are minimal.

In between, there’s the optional RamBox cargo management system that makes use of previously unused space in the box sides for secure, weather-proof storage, along with an in-box cargo management system. Side storage is long enough and deep enough to accommodate a set of golf clubs and drains in the bottom allow the big bins to carry ice and a significant quantity of your favorite canned or bottled beverages – a modern way to drive yourself to drink.

The system takes up only enough box space to cover the wheel housings, meaning there’s not much loss of cargo capacity. The design maintains 49 inches between the sides.

Crew cabs also have Store-in-Floor bins behind the front seats, a good place to keep small items out of sight.

There are four models: ST in regular or Quad cab; SLT in regular, Quad and Crew cab; Sport in all three cab configurations and Laramie in regular or Quad cab.

Under the new aluminum hood there’s a choice of three engines: 3.7-litre V6, 4.7 flex fuel V8 and new 5.7L HEMI V8 that delivers more power and somewhat better fuel economy. Shifting is handled by either a four-speed or five-speed automatic transmission. A diesel is planned for the light duty lineup in 2010.

One of the more significant changes to the Ram is in the rear suspension. Leaf springs have been replaced by a five-link coil setup with solid axle. The launch test drive answered the question of whether the new setup would compromise pulling power and 4x4 traction. GVWR ranges from 6,025 to 6,800 lb. and payload ranges from 1,270 to 1,720 lb., not bad for a light duty pickup.

On the road, the new suspension shows just how big an improvement it is when you hit broken pavement and rough surfaces. The truck stays firmly planted to the ground, there’s no tendency for the back end to skate sideways.

Overall, the ride is superb, more like a big sedan’s sport suspension than a truck. Steering, while a tad heavy, is responsive, a welcome thing when we headed into an off-road section of the test route which, in tinder-dry California was mainly sand of talcum powder consistency…loose, deep and slippery,. The select-on-the-fly 4WD system works as you’d expect, but that new rear suspension makes vehicle control a joyful thing rather than a heart-in-the-throat affair on steep, rough descents.

If the dust from that stuff doesn’t get into the vehicle, you can bet the seals are weather tight. A check of the RamBox system revealed no dust at all.

On the inside, the new Crew Cab is a comfortable environment – quiet, efficiently laid out and luxurious with soft-touch surfaces. The rear doors open wide to accept passengers or cargo, if the seat is folded.

Visibility is excellent. Gauges are easy to read and everything is within reach of the driver. Ram’s first use of a centre console with floor shifter is particularly attractive.

The test truck had features like HEMI power with variable valve timing and MDS; electronic vehicle information centre; heated and cooled leather seating; heated steering wheel and heated rear seats; surround sound audio system connected to MyGig system and Store-in-the-Floor storage bins with removable liners. You can also add a rear seat video entertainment system and DVD navigation.

Standard safety systems include multistage driver and front passenger air bags and side curtain air bags for front and back; four-wheel disc brakes with ABS; Hill Start Assist; trailer sway control; all-speed traction control; tire pressure monitor and engine immobilizer. A voice-activated hands-free communication system is available.

There are enough choices in configuration and interior amenities to make the new Ram 1500 fill just about any need.

Whether it will overcome the increasing move away from trucks remains to be seen, but if you want, or need, a pickup, it’s worth a look.
