New Porsche is rugged and rally-ready

If you've ever doubted the offroading capabilities of the Porsche Cayenne, the German automaker has just the thing to help make the 'common man' a believer.

Porsche pays homage to its past rally winners with the Cayenne S Transsyberia production vehicle, named after the SUVs that have won the grueling 4,400 mile Transsyberia Rally three years in a row.

The Cayenne S Transsyberia production model will be fitted with the same 4.8-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine that is used in the Cayenne GTS. It produces 405 horsepower and is mated to a Tiptronic S six-speed automatic transmission.

All Cayenne S Transsyberias will be equipped with air suspension and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Staying true to its Porsche performance roots, though, the Transsyberia's traction management system, which divides torque between the front and rear, will have a 62% rear-bias for 'greater on-road driving dynamics.'

It won't be difficult to tell the Transsyberia apart from other Cayenne models. It will come available with decorative 'Cayenne S Transsyberia' side strips and offroad roof lights (for vehicles without the optional moonroof) at no extra cost. It will also come standard with front and rear stainless steel skid plates, while an optional off-road package features a variable and lockable rear differential, rock rails with integrated skid plates, a reinforced engine-bay guard, and enhanced protection for the fuel tank and rear axle. A second towing lug is also provided.

While inside the vehicle, occupants will be sitting in standard sport seats with Alcantara seat inserts. The driver will use a standard multifunction steering wheel also covered in Alcantara with a “twelve o’clock” mark at the top of the wheel in the same contrasting color as the exterior.

Four colour combinations will be available: black with orange accents or crystal silver metallic, also with orange accents, black with meteor grey metallic highlights or meteor grey metallic with crystal silver metallic highlights. All models come with 18-inch Cayenne S II wheels except for the meteor grey metallic with crystal silver metallic. Contrasting color is used on the air intake vent fins, exterior mirror housing and extended roof spoiler.

The 2010 Cayenne S Transsyberia will be available in Canada in early spring of 2009 with an MSRP of $87,200. Twenty-one units are slated for Canada, and less than 600 units total will be coming to North America.
