Tacoma offers more choice

So far, in what has been a difficult year for pickup sales, Toyota is holding its own – at least in Canada.

Although the full-size pickup segment here was down by 7.2% after the first three quarters of 2008, Tundra sales rose by about 10%. Same thing for little brother Tacoma. While the compact truck segment in Canada fell by 12.3% in the first three quarters, Tacoma sales also were up about 10%.

Both 4x2 and 4x4 Tacoma sales have shown improvement over the same period in 2007 and things are likely to be even sunnier with the arrival of the new 2009 trucks. And a new Tacoma model now gives consumers a choice of eight different configurations.

For 2009, Canadians will be able to buy a Tacoma 4x4 Access Cab pickup with their choice of an inline four or V6 engine and either a five-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.

These days, a lot of small contractors are looking for economy as well as durability in a small truck and the Tacoma Access Cab with four cylinder engine would seem to fit the bill.

I briefly got to try out the newest Tacoma model on a rainy day in Ontario’s cottage country. Although this model is available with a 4.0-litre V6, the one I drove had the more economical DOHC, 16 valve, 2.7-litre inline four.

We weren’t hauling a load mind you, but the 2.7-litre had lots of pep and low end grunt and offered more than enough power in the driving situations we encountered. Towing capacity is a respectable 3,500 lbs., but if you’ve got a bigger boat or horse trailer to haul you might have to step up to the V6.

As well as the go-anywhere, at any time, ability of on-demand 4WD, you get some nice features that are not standard equipment on the 4x2 Access Cab; among them, air conditioning, 50/50 split rear bench seat, front splash guards and fender flares. Sixteen-inch tires and wheels are also a 4x4 Access Cab upgrade, but our test vehicle had 17-inch aluminum alloys that were part of a $2,020 SR5 Power Package.

The front buckets are first rate and come with active headrests that help lessen whiplash injury. Dual-stage front airbags are standard across the Tacoma lineup, as are seat-mounted side airbags and rollover-sensing side curtain airbags.

The Access Cab is a good combination of passenger/cargo space with seating for four and a six-foot bed. If you want rear seat riders to really be able to stretch their legs you can move up to Tacoma Double Cab, but bed length then shrinks to five feet.

It took a while for Toyota to learn that North America pickup buyers want to be able to tailor their trucks to their own individual tastes. With the variety of models available for 2009 I’d say they’ve learned that lesson.
