Performance fits Azure to a T

Stylish and powerful, the new 500-hp Bentley Azure T may be destined to become a future classic, combining driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury.

“The Azure’s proportions provided us with the ideal platform to work with when creating the new Azure T,” said Raul Pires, manager of exterior design for Bentley Motors. “The prominent haunches and ‘supermodel’ body inspired our designers to create a new interpretation of a Bentley convertible with the accent placed on a more muscular, sporting stance.”

Introduced at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Azure T is fitted with the high performance version of Crewe’s iconic 6.75 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, following the 1996 Continental coupe and 2002 Arnage sedan in the line of Bentley models to wear the ‘T’ insignia that denotes distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance.

Further enhancements include 20-inch five-spoke bright alloy wheels shod with 255/40ZR20 Pirelli P Zero performance tires, ‘Le Mans’ front wing vents, dark tint matrix grille and a sculpted, retractable Flying ‘B’ ornament. Other exterior design features of the Azure T include Bentley ‘Jewel’ fuel filler cap, twin exhaust tail pipes and a choice of 42 exterior paint colours.

“The new Azure T reflects our passion for creating the world’s most exhilarating and prestigious convertibles that, true to the Bentley T tradition, blend sophistication with a powerful presence,” commented Stuart McCullough, member of the Board, Sales and Marketing.

For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 produces 500 hp and 738 lb.-ft of torque (over 90 percent of torque is available between 1,800 and 3,800 rpm), representing an 11 percent increase in power and a 14 percent increase in torque over the regular Azure’s already-awesome 450 hp and 645 lb.-ft.

Those outputs help propel the Azure T from zero to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 288 km/h. 100 mph is reached 12.1 seconds from launch. Power is delivered to the rear wheels by a six-speed automatic, and wheel spin is controlled by electronic stability control. A tire pressure monitor system is standard.

Standard interior enhancements include diamond quilting to seats and door panels, embroidered ‘Bentley’ emblems on front and rear centre seats, drilled alloy brake and accelerator pedals, brushed aluminum trim, a USB plug and knurled handles, switches and shift knob, among others.

The optional equipment list includes a Naim premium audio system with digital signal processor modes, 10 speakers, sub-woofer and an 1100 Watt amplifier.

Operated hydraulically at the touch of a switch, the three-layer canvas roof is elegantly stowed beneath the rear parcel shelf in 25 seconds, with no impact on luggage space since the roof has its well space.

Azure T is available in the full Bentley range of 42 exterior colours, 25 interior hides, and the full range of premium veneers; as well, the comprehensive line-up of Mulliner (Bentley’s personalization department) options and its bespoke colour-matching service that enable Bentley owners to create a uniquely personal car.
