New Mustang kicks it up a notch

From the first new logo since its introduction in 1964, to almost completely new exterior sheet metal, the 2010 Mustang brings about a lot of change, 45 years after the original hit the streets.

Though it ups the refinement levels even more, Ford insists the newest Mustang is still a true muscle car at heart. The V8-powered GT model has more horsepower than the outgoing model, both V8- and V6-powered versions have new individual grilles, while lower fascias, a spear character line on the doors, and aggressively angled rear corners make this more than just your everyday coupe or convertible.

In addition to all of this though, the 2010 Mustang can also be equipped with features like a rearview camera, Sync entertainment and communication system and Ford's new 'Easy Fuel' capless fuel system.

There are some other features on the 2010 version that are taken from some of the original Mustang models, such as smaller fog lamps (on the V8-powered Mustang), and tail lamps that feature three LED bulbs firing sequentially from the inside for turn indication.

To give the vehicle a cleaner exterior, designers tucked the washer fluid nozzles into the cowl, and moved the antenna to the rear. Ford says this also gives it a quieter interior.

Wheel and tire combinations are 1-inch larger across the board, ranging from 17-inches to 19-inches depending on the model you choose. At launch, customers will be able to combine their V6 or V8 Mustang to either a coupe, convertible or glass-roof model. Special edition models like the Bullitt will follow.

Ford says that much of the new Mustang GT's foundation is based on the Bullitt model that was released in 2008. Power has been increased from 300-horsepower to 310-horsepower, while drivers have the choice of which gasoline they can use. It can run on regular gasoline, but the Mustang will automatically calibrate when using premium, resulting in better mid-range torque.

Ford also made changes to improve ride and handling.

"We adjusted the springs, stabilizer bars and shocks to better balance the ride, steering and handling for all models, which results in a more engaging driving experience," adds Mustang Vehicle Engineering manager Tom Barnes. "The 2010 Mustangs feel more controlled for steering and handling, yet retain a good ride balance."

The 2010 Mustang's interior gets some changes as well. The new one-piece instrument panel is crafted in soft-touch Thermoplastic Olefin, and genuine aluminum finish panels are available as an option. Drivers can also customize ambient and instrument lighting. Ford says that extra sound deadeners were used to improve quietness, especially on the highway and rough roads. One thing they say they didn't change, though, is the Mustang's signature throaty exhaust note.

Other small touches abound inside, including the shifter, which is accented with a chrome trim ring and the armrests, which are padded and flush with the rest of the centre console.

The 2010 Mustang will be built at the Auto Alliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
