Boxster brings the bold

Not about to let its older sibling hog the spotlight, the 2009 Boxster roadster is making use of Porsche's new PDK transmission that's already appearing in the 911 Carrera.

The newest Boxster has been redesigned (along with its fraternal twin the Cayman) and receives a more powerful, more fuel-efficient set of engines.

The base Boxster uses a 2.9-litre inline-6 engine that produces 255-horsepower, up from last year's model which produced 245-horsepower. The more powerful Boxster S uses a 3.4-litre inline-6 that makes 310-horsepower, also up by 10 from last year's S-version.

The Boxster also gets Porsche's new 7-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission, a dual-clutch gearbox that replaces Porsche's previous Tiptronic-S sequential shift automatic transmission. Besides being quicker at shifting than the Tiptronic-S, the PDK also improves fuel economy - by 16% according to Porsche.

Available with optional launch control, the PDK-equipped Boxster can go from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, something no other production Boxster can best. The 6-speed manual equipped Boxster has a 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds.

To improve driving dynamics, the suspension has been changed to allow for better handling and comfort. The valve control map on the steering transmission was modified to reduce steering forces, giving the Boxster 'even more agile and spontaneous steering behaviour' according to Porsche.

Newly-designed wheels are a half-inch wider on the base Boxster to accommodate the larger brake system of the S-models on the front axle.

In addition, the Boxster uses the latest generation of Porsche Stability Management (PSM) for increased safety. For 2009, PSM has two new functions - brake pre-loading and the brake assistant. When the driver lets go of the gas pedel quickly - such as during an emergency manouevre - the PSM hydraulic control unit builds up pressure on the wheel brakes before the driver even presses down the brake pedal, moving the brake pads slightly towards the discs for immediate action. PSM also delivers increased brake pressure when an emergency situation is recognized for even more stopping power.

Also new to the '09 Boxster is its exterior look. New halogen headlights with integrated direction indicators are reminiscent of those on the Carrera GT, while new LED rear lights taper to the outside and integrated in the modified rear end of the car.

The Boxster sets itself apart visually from its hardtop sibgling the Cayman by way of differing front air intakes, as well as through the new rear panels with diffuser inserts (Cayman has a wind deflector plate). Foglamps on the Boxster now come standard on all models, and are rectangular in shape. Cayman uses round foglamps.

Once inside the Boxster, passengers can opt for a new Porsche Communication System (PCM) that comes with hard-disc navigation, serving as the central controls for audio, communication and navigation features. The PCM screen itself is larger, and has touch-screen capabilities.

Customers can also opt for cooled seats (along with heated) with full or partial leather.
