Mazda3 puts on a happy face

LOS ANGELES – There’s a number in the famous Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie that Mazda could adopt as the theme song for its new 2010 Mazda3: Put on a Happy Face.

Because that’s exactly what the stylists have done for the new generation of the compact sedan with zoom-zoom. Seen from the front, the way the grille, headlamps and front bumper go together make it look like the Mazda3 is grinning from ear to ear. It’s the happiest face on a car since the Dodge Neon of the 1990s.

Search for a used Mazda3

Designer Jonathan Fraer calls it “a more sporty and expressive front end aimed at the younger generation,” and it has given Mazda engineers reason to smile because it’s not only attractive but functional, resulting in a drag co-efficient of 0.29 – best in class.

I think owners will find lots to smile about too. The Mazda3 looks like it wants to have fun – and then delivers on that promise when you get behind the wheel. That’s especially true of models equipped with the 2.5-litre inline four, which is coupled to a six-speed stick with short, crisp throws. Base engine is a 2.0-litre inline-four married to a five-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic replaces the previous generation’s four-speed unit and is optional with either engine.

Mazda3 is still a sales success, even at the end of its five-year life cycle, so the goal was “evolution, not revolution” says Ruben Archilla, group manager of research and development for Mazda’s North American operations.

The 2010 Mazda3 sedans will come in three versions – GX, GS and GT – and even the base GX is packed with features such as ABS, electro-hydraulic power steering and power windows and locks. The ultimate model is the GT with GTE package. It comes with items not usually found on cars in this class such as push-button start, dual zone A/C, rain-sensing wipers, an eight-way power driver’s seat with two memory settings, a driver’s multi information display (MID), Bose surround sound audio system with 10 speakers and Bluetooth capability. The only options for GTE will be a power moonroof and five-speed automatic.

Program manager Yoshiyuki Maeda says more than 800,000 miles of driving went into Mazda3 development around the world – and it shows.

I got to try various GT models for a day on the twisty canyon roads outside LA and can report the DOHC, 167-hp 2.5-litre engine has lots of built-in zoom-zoom, especially when coupled to the excellent six-speed stick. The new, lightweight engine has a sweet spot around 3,000 rpm and will pull strongly there in all gears. As you might expect, sporty handling is one of the car’s strong points and tweaking an already good suspension system enables it to ride flat and negotiate tight turns and high-speed esses with aplomb. The body is stiffer than before and although high-tensile steel now accounts for 35% of total body weight, the car is 11 kg lighter.

From the driver’s seat, you’re presented with two big pods housing the speedometer and tachometer mounted directly behind the steering wheel, with auxiliary gauges and controls spread out around them. It is at the same time functional and elegant. The beltline that dives down from strong rear shoulders toward muscular front fenders not only is attractive, but results in better visibility for the driver.

The cabin is quiet and comfortable and Mazda says it’s 5% larger than the previous generation. Although riding on the same 103.9-inch wheelbase, the 2010 version is slightly longer overall.

Company spokesman Gregory Young says this is an important car for Mazda Canada. The company has now produced two million Mazda 3s at its plant in Hiroshima, Japan and 380,000 of those have been sold in this country. In fact, with more than 50,000 Mazda3s sold here already in 2008, Mike Collinson, director of marketing for Mazda Canada, says the car is having its best year ever with an 11.9% share of the crowded and competitive compact car market.

We’ll have to wait for the Bologna Auto Show in December to get our first look at the new five-door hatchback, but both sedan and hatch versions will be at Mazda dealers across Canada starting in mid January 2009.

Prices won’t be revealed until the Montreal Auto Show on Jan. 15,2009 but expect them to be in the range of $17,000-$18,000 for base models to $27,000-$28,000 for loaded GTs.

Program manager Maeda said the challenge was to build an exciting, fun-to-drive car that would exceed customers’ expectations once again.

I’d say mission accomplished.
