Bentley flexes muscle, fuel

Once again, Bentley is taking things to the extreme with its latest model, the Continental Supersports.

Besides being the fastest and most powerful production Bentley ever, the Supersports is also the first Bentley that can run on both regular gasoline or E85 biofuel. The automaker says that this is the first step in making its entire lineup FlexFuel compatible by 2012.

The Supersports' 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine makes 621 brake horsepower and Bentley says it uses a new 'Quickshift' transmission that halves shift times and allows for double downshifts. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 329 km/h. Lighter components are used to reduce overall weight (it's 243 lbs. lighter than the Continental GT Speed), suspension is retuned for a sportier feel, and the vehicle's all-wheel drive system has a 40:60 rear-biased torque split.

The suspension is lowered by 10 mm. at the front and 15 mm. at the rear for improved handling, while the vehicle rides on ZR20 Pirelli ultra-high performance tires. To get this performance vehicle stopping quickly, it comes standard with big carbon ceramic brakes (420 mm. front, 356 mm. rear).

Exterior highlights on the Supersports include standard 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, a new front bumper with larger air intake grilles, restyled rear wings to accomodate the wider rear track, elliptical tailpipe trims, and a reprofiled rear spoiler.

Inside, the Supersports actually drops the two rear seats that the Continental GT has, instead replacing them with a stowage deck with a carbon fibre luggage retaining beam.

Other interior highlights include a single centre armrest, drilled alloy sports pedals, 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and gear lever trimmed with 'Soft Touch' leather, 'Supersports' carbon fibre treadplates to both front doors and carbon fibre finish to fascia and centre console.

The Bentley Continental Supersports will be available in the autumn of 2009.
