Kia’s Koup de grace

Hot on the heels of its new compact Forte sedan, Kia is unveiling a coupe variant to continue its climb up through the mainstream ranks.

The oddly named Kia Forte Koup is due to hit showrooms in summer 2009 as a 2010 model, keeping the widely-praised presentation of the concept shown during the 2009 auto show season. It also mimics its parent company’s initial coupe offering, the Hyundai Scoupe of 1989.

“The Forte Koup embodies raw athleticism and sporty sophistication in its distinctive styling and fulfills Kia’s goal of becoming a design led brand,” said Maria Soklis, Vice President & COO of Kia Canada.

Koup will be available in two trim levels (EX and SX), with prices starting at $18,495 and $21,495, respectively.

Forte Koup utilizes the same platform as the sedan, with an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and stabilizer bar and a torsion beam rear suspension with struts and coil springs. Engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering provides the most advantageous amount of assist for varying road conditions. The SX comes with a sport-tuned suspension providing a firmer ride with reduced body roll and improved handling.

Koup’s 2.0-litre DOHC four-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing produces 156 horsepower and 144 lb.-ft. of torque, making it more powerful than its competitors entry-level models. The SX features an upgraded 2.4-litre inline four-cylinder, delivering 173 hp and 168 lb.-ft. Dual exhaust outlets are standard.

The smaller engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic, while the larger one gets a standard six-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic with sequential shift control.

The standard equipment list includes, among others, heated front sport seats (height adjustable for the driver), air conditioning, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 sound system with USB and AUX outlets, Bluetooth, power heated mirrors, power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, cruise control and heated front seats for cold Canadian winters. The SX adds sport leather seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio, power sliding and tilting sunroof, metal pedals and metal finish trim and a trip computer.

On the safety front, dual front airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, antilock four-wheel brakes and electronic stability control are all standard.
