2009 Fiat 500

Back to the future

Fiat introduced the latest 500 exactly 50 years to the day of its debut.

The original (rear engine, rear drive) 500 was in production in various bodystyles until 1977, was resurrected as a hatchback Cinquecento in the '90s, which evolved into the current Fiat Panda on which the Nuova 500 (actually the same name as the original when it was introduced in 1957) is based.

As with the Volkswagen Beetle whose history the 500 seems to parallel, it is now a front engined, front drive car. It also mimics the New Beetle by holding true to the original design while leaping forward in areas of comfort and safety, technology and equipment.

Its overall size is almost smack dab between that of a Smart Fortwo and a Toyota Yaris three-door. It's cute appeal is designated by its rounded (Fiat calls it robust) profile and expressionist face (headlights for the eyes, logo for the button nose, and the lower intake for a smiling mouth that's topped off by a thinner opening Fiat calls “whiskers”). It's jolly!

The interior is also a throwback to the original with distinctive circle headrests, two toned fabric and leather seats and a dash/wheel combination that looks porcelain-like. Thanks to high cabin, it reportedly seats four adults comfortably. Leather trim, iPod connection, Bluetooth, navigation and aluminum pedals are all available, as is a fragrance diffuser (built in air freshener, if you will). Exterior options include a sunroof, rear luggage rack and a car cover displaying the original 500.

Three four-cylinder engines are available (a 75 hp 1.3L turbodiesel, 69 hp 1.2 and 100 hp 1.4), of which one of two gasoline engines would likely make it to North America, if the car is ever sold here (no announced plans yet). The standard transmission is either a five-speed or six-speed manual, with a clutchless sequential shift five-speed manual available (like an automatic with sequential shift).

Handling is entrusted to independent Macpherson struts up front and semi-independent torsion beam at the rear. It rides on standard 15-inch wheels or optional 16-inchers.

On the safety front, up to seven airbags can be fitted – two front, two side-impact, side air curtains on both sides, and a driver's knee – as can antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and hydraulic brake assist, stability control and anti-slip regulation (traction control). A hill-holder clutch aids in launch on uphills.
