MKT is big on features

You knew when Ford introduced its Flex large wagon with an overwhelming host of technology features that it was primed for a Lincoln variant and here it is – the MKT, made alongside Flex at the Oakville Ontario plant.

MKT comes standard in all-wheel drive but there is an indication Lincoln will offer a front-wheel drive model at a later time. Power is supplied by a choice of two engines – a standard 268-hp 3.7-litre V6 or an available 355-hp 3.5 twin-turbo V6 that carries Ford’s Ecoboost designation (economy and boost, or power, combined).

The vehicle made available to us for a couple days was equipped with the latter, exhibiting superb acceleration from a standstill (not easy considering this is a big vehicle exhibiting big vehicle weight), while returning admirable economy.

Of note, too, is superb styling. Nowhere does it say large wagons have to look like bricks on wheels, and Lincoln evidently took this to heart while staying true to the recent Lincoln design direction. In pictures, it makes the car look smaller than it is but you quickly discover just how deceiving those pictures can be as you walk up and then sit in it.

Interior room is obviously abundant, especially in the middle row, where occupants benefit from all the luxuries usually reserved for front seat occupants – our test vehicle had heated and cooled individual seats separated by a full length console (it starts at the dash and ends just in front of the third row seats) finished off in a refrigerated compartment.

Two roof glass panels let in an abundance of daylight, but don’t allow the mounting of a ceiling DVD player. That’s reserved for the back of the front seat headrests. Our tester’s adjustable middle seats (fore/aft as well as reclining) also came with foot rests (removable wedges). Access is ok through wide rear doors that open up at a narrow angle (probably to keep children from dinging the neighbouring cars in today’s tight parking lot spaces).

The opening is partly responsible for not providing an easy gateway to the rear seats, in spite of the middle seats’ folding and tumbling at the push of a button. The rear accommodations are tight for all but the smallest of passengers, thanks to constrictive leg room and a roof line that swoops down to the aerodynamic rear end of the car.

At the other end, front occupants get heated and cooled power adjustable seats with individual adjustable armrests over the centre console storage cubby (the armrests will cover each of the dual cupholders, though, so you can have comfortable arms or a coffee on the go but not both).

The driving position is further tailored by power tilt/telescoping steering wheel and adjustable pedals. As with many of Ford’s top-end products, MKT gets the technological treatment with Sync, navigation system and back up camera all touch controlled via a large centrestack video display.

And also in keeping with the latest safety features, MKT features a complete array of airbags (front, side, curtain), traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, and monitors for tires, blind spots and even cross traffic (it’s kind of disconcerting to start backing out of your driveway in the morning and hear a loud chime … until you see that little Smart coming round the corner – very effective!).

All in all, MKT is what you’d expect in the latest and greatest Lincoln line-up. There was talk sometime back about a little roadster, but Lincoln really is best suited to full-sized vehicles and the MKT shows that being big doesn’t mean monstrous or excessive.
