Built for Speed

Tinkering with success can be hazardous, but the minds at Mazda took the chance and came up with a winner in the 2010 Mazdaspeed3.

I thought the Mazda3 Sport GT was a terrific ride. I should have saved some superlatives, because this is a huge step beyond that, even if its price tag is about four grand higher at $32,995. It is also light years ahead of the previous Mazdaspeed3 in terms of power, handling, looks and ride.

This car looks better than the GT as well. The front end’s smiling face is a little more subdued and the functional hood scoop is a welcome visual feature. Wheel wells are filled by 18-inch aluminum wheels.

We had five hours behind the wheel on all kinds of road conditions in 38 degree heat.

Brake/manoeuvre course, slalom course, autocross course and public roads. It doesn’t matter to this car…it will do anything you ask when you ask.

Turn-in is quick and understeer never reared its ugly head even once, unusual when you’re really pushing a front-wheel-drive car around the pylons of an autocross course.

Brakes are fast, rock solid and showed no sign of fade even after multiple hard stops.

Power is still provided by Mazda’s MZR 2.3L direct injection spark ignition turbocharged engine that puts out 263 horsepower (compared to the GT’s 167)and 280 lb.-ft. of torque routed to the front wheels through a oh-so-smooth six-speed manual transmission.

Power output is strong and consistent and the engineers have reined in the previous edition’s pronounced torque steer. The only downside is the slightest of lags off the line when you mash the throttle.

Transmission gear ratios have been modified with taller second through fifth gears to spread the maximum engine torque across a wider rev band. This is one of those transmissions with which a driver just loves to play.

Mazdaspeed3 builds on the Mazda3 Sport theme with reinforcing inside the front cowl and member gussets to strengthen the joints between the rear suspension towers and rear floorboard. Use of high and ultra-high strength steel in bumpers and side impact beams has nearly doubled while making both areas lighter.

Everything goes together to allow a firmer suspension tuning without compromising ride comfort.

And that’s one of the impressive things about this car. It’s a tiger on the track and a smooth operator in the open road, effectively damping out road imperfections while still grabbing onto the road in hard cornering.

There are no options offered on the Mazdaspeed3, but I don’t know what I would add.

All the performance stuff is complemented by standards like navigation system, traction control, dynamic stability control, aluminum pedals, power driver’s seat, leather seating, satellite radio, perimeter alarm and BOSE Centerpoint surround sound, just to name a few.

There aren’t many cars I get enthused about at first drive. This is one of them. I’d love to have one in my driveway.
