Kia flies the Koup

Before I get too “karried” away with the sporty, seductive Kia Koup, let me sort out this name thing. Take a look around at how parents are differentiating their kids with names like Shon, Sheela and Ashelye? Times are changing, and Kia is keeping pace.

Koup is true to its Kia roots of quality and great pricing, starting at $18,495 with a huge list of standard features for two basic models ... maybe basic isn’t the right word, as they are anything but ‘basik’ (couldn’t resist!).

The two models are the 2.0-litre EX, and the 2.4-litre SX. Both are positioned within the sport minded compact coupe segment, which includes a fairly potent group of competitors, with an aggressive modern look you wouldn’t guess as a Kia, if you removed the badges.

As this is Kia’s first two-door, you might think it has quite a bit in common with the four door Forte, but in fact, the only piece of bodywork that can be switched between them is the hood.

Inside, the black presentation is nicely accented with metal finish, which doesn’t look at all cheap. I especially like the center stack and the seats fitted with extra bolsters. I question the lack of power seats, but the thinking was to keep Koup in a target price range it could either have power seats or leather upholstery and the thought was that leather was a better option; think about it - how many times do you actually adjust the seat in your own car? But you can always enjoy leather.

And speaking of enjoyment – Kia arranged the launch for the ICAR Circuit just outside Montreal, which is contrary to the manufacturer tendency to steer away from the racetracks because of the abuse cars take at the hands of journalists, even in controlled conditions.

When pushed hard Koup is probably one of the most neutral front wheel drive cars out there. There is a little understeer, but that is easily controlled with the throttle and steering. The suspension is semi-stiff - not bone jarring but not like driving a sofa, either. I pounded a few curbs (accidentally of course) and it sucked the bumps up no problem.

Both engines pull very smoothly, and I found both manuals (six-speed in the SX, five in EX) easy to shift and definite on the throws. The brakes, which I was sure were going to give up, didn’t even fade on my longest run (seven hard laps of the 3.8 km circuit).

Which is pretty good, considering these weren’t “track” cars specially prepped for track use - we drove them to the track, hammered on them and then drove them another 200 km after that. And as if to throw on more test at us, it started to rain as we left the track; I can relate Koup is as sure footed in the wet as it is in the dry. Very impressive!

Koup doesn’t feel like an $18,000 car – the base model has 156 hp (and 144 lb.-ft. of torque) from a two-litre engine, six airbags, four wheel disc brakes with ABS, power windows, power locks, heated power mirrors, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth, all those auxiliary ports, 60:40 split rear seats, keyless entry and telescopic steering wheel. And I’m thinking the full leather, loaded SX with the 2.4-litre 173 hp (168 lb.-ft.) is kinda priced a little low at $21,495.

Canadian models come standard with – and you’ll love this – front seat heaters and windshield de-icers.

If I had to sum up the Koup, I’d say it’s definitely “Kool”.
