Koup is true to its Kia roots of quality and great pricing, starting at $18,495 with a huge list of standard features for two basic models ... maybe basic isn’t the right word, as they are anything but. (Russ Bond/AUTONET)

Both Forte Koup engines pull very smoothly, and I found both manuals (six-speed in the SX, five in EX) easy to shift and definite on the throws. The brakes, which I was sure were going to give up, didn’t even fade on my longest run. (Russ Bond/AUTONET)

Inside, the black presentation is nicely accented with metal finish, which doesn’t look at all cheap. I especially like the center stack and the seats fitted with extra bolsters. The two Forte Koup models are the 2.0-litre EX, and the 2.4-litre SX. Both are positioned within the sport minded compact coupe segment, which includes a fairly potent group of competitors, with an aggressive modern look you wouldn’t guess as a Kia, if you removed the badges. (Russ Bond/AUTONET)
