The face is familiar, but I’ve never seen this car before.

I know the family is Mazda, but what is it?

The answer is Mazda2 and it’s from Europe. So what was it doing in Canada?

Just visiting, apparently, but it’s planning to move here for 2011.

That’s nice, but if it had been here during this year’s economic troubles, the five-door sub-compact would have sold like popcorn.

Mazda Canada brought the car from Europe for an 11-day cross-country expedition which began Sept. 14 in Halifax and ended Sept. 24 in Vancouver on a trek dubbed A Small Car in A Big Land.

Canadian journalists joined the trip on 11 legs of the journey, each of us spending a day on the road with a production crew putting together a story for Mazda’s in-house customer magazine.

My stint began in Regina and ended in Calgary some 14 hours later. The journey across the mostly flat lands was on the Trans Canada highway, but the crew found enough interesting features to chew up a lot of digital camera memory.

The second last leg of the trip brought us to dinosaur land—the badlands area around Drumheller, AB where there are a few twisty roads to be found along with plenty of spectacular scenery for the ever-watchful eyes of the camera guys.

Spend this kind of time in any vehicle, especially a small one, and you definitely come to a like or dislike conclusion.

I like.

Design leaves no doubt this is a Mazda; it’s just smaller. The profile features a sporty look with very short overhangs, producing a “let’s go” stance. There’s nothing ostentatious about the 2 (i.e., no extraneous adornments).

Inside, the cabin is surprisingly roomy. There’s plenty of room for heads, hips and feet and four people (the claim is five, but there’s no chance) can ride in comfort with a decent amount of space behind the rear seat for stowing gear. Flipping the seats down more than triples the available storage space.

The dash arrangement is decidedly minimalist, but the information you need is readily available and controls work well.

Under the hood is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 102 horsepower and 101 lb.-ft. of torque. In the trek vehicle it’s hooked to an automatic transmission although a five-speed manual is the standard shiftworker.

The combination is slow off the line, but then this is not supposed to be a tire-burning getaway vehicle. Zero to 100 takes awhile but 80 to 120 goes by quickly, so I never felt any anxiety about passing.

Even after several hours, driver fatigue never became a factor. The seats are comfortable, visibility is excellent, the ride is surprisingly smooth and the cabin is a quiet environment.

It’s a very thrifty drinker, too, and that’s a good thing when you’re driving across Canada.

Mazda Canada points out this is not the vehicle that will be produced for our market. It’s a Russian-spec vehicle, actually. We can expect to see some interior cosmetic changes, certainly, and maybe a performance tweak or two.

Hopefully they don’t mess with it too much. It’s a pretty cool vehicle the way it is.
