E-Class of the field

Muskoka, Ont. – And so Mercedes introduces another new E-Class sedan, its ninth generation – there have been some 10 million sold all over the world in the past 80 years. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with the car (there isn’t!), it’s just that you expect it to be perfect and only when it isn’t are you surprised by anything it does.

The latest one is again packed with all kinds of useful goodies and is probably the best business class sedan in the world ... at least until the new BMW 5 Series, its compatriot and rival, makes its debut in the coming months.

And in keeping with history, the newest E-Class looks radically different from its predecessor and other cars in the Mercedes line, although there is a family resemblance.

The grille is about the only thing that instantly identifies the car as a Benz, with the lights considerably changed and the panels de-evolving into a shape similar to some of the E-Class ancestors. Mercedes calls it cubist.

The interior furthers the simple elegance and comfort put forth by every Mercedes vehicle, and continues to wow cabin occupants with a bevy of technological beauties.

Among the new features, a four-zone climate control system with three climatization modes that adapts air distribution and volume to individual preferences.

Other interior options add to the comfort and convenience of the E-Class, but none probably as much as the articulating driver’s seat that heats, cools, massages and provides side bolstering as dictated by steering input – turn aggressively to the right, for example, and the left side bolster hugs in to keep the driver from slipping toward the door; go smoothly full-right to full left and the left bolster slowly recedes and the right one starts to come on; jerk the wheel left and the bolster immediately jumps to attention.

Very neat!

And, of course, there are the now traditional list of safety add-ons such as blind spot and lane departure warnings, crash prevention and distance maintaining features, and low light warnings and assists. Among them, Adaptive Highbeam Assist that uses a front camera to sense oncoming headlights or taillights and adjusts the E-Class beams so they don’t reach the vehicle ahead (between 65 and 300 metres).

Night View Assist PLUS is another nighttime technology that uses infra-red projectors in the headlights to detect pedestrians as far as 150 metres (500 ft) ahead and display their outlines in the instrument panel display.

And to reduce crashes due to driver fatigue, the innovative ATTENTION ASSIST scans for signs of drowsiness by establishing a driver profile within the first 20 minutes of driving, using 70 parameters. It can then identify erratic steering corrections usually made by drivers as they begin to tire and triggers an audible warning to suggest that maybe a break is needed.

For occupant protection, a total of nine airbags stand ready to leap into action in the event of a crash.

Maintained are the E-Class stable members – the E350 4matic powered by a 3.2 V6, the 5.5-litre V8 engined E550 4matic and the high-performance E63 AMG housing a 6.2-litre V8. Joining the line-up after the initial E-Class sedan wave will be the rear-wheel drive 6.2L V8 engined E63 AMG and E350 Bluetec powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6.

It all adds up to a line of very good, very elegant sedans. And it so happens that prices have been dropped substantially (by as much as $20,000) for the coming year, thanks to Mercedes’ desire to appeal to younger buyer.

Stronger, sleeker, cheaper ... what’s not to like?
