Breathing new life into Mustang

Dearborn, Michigan – Christmas 2009 came just a little bit early for Mustang fans.

After 2005’s resurrection of the legendary pony car met with such resounding success, there followed several more Mustang iterations, each celebrating a special model in the car’s history.

It seemed there was only one thing left to make its comeback complete: a modern day version of the iconic 5.0 litre engine.

Consider it done. Yes, the 5.0 litre engine is back, and it’s better in every way. With an output of 412 horsepower, 390 lb.-ft. of torque and 7,000 rpm redline, the new V8 is projected to deliver highway mileage of 25 mpg (U.S.), leaving a footprint no larger than the 4.6 litre mill.

Mike Harrison, Chief Engineer and team leader for the 5.0 litre project and an unabashed horsepower and racing enthusiast, proclaims the new car to be the “best five litre Mustang in the world”.

According to Harrison, the secret to the new engine is in the breathing. All new, compact heads leave more room for a “beautiful composite intake that’s meant to be uncovered”. Vertical intake runners improve air flow. Moving the alternator to the engine’s side left room for a front-mounted throttle body, which in turn delivers air in a straight line directly into the intake. Inside the all aluminum, ribbed block is a forged steel, fully counterweighted crankshaft.

Instead of heavy exhaust manifolds, the engine exhales through fully tuned, tubular headers.

Piston-cooling oil jets not only improve performance, but warm up oil faster for cold starts.

One of the crucial elements in the engine’s ability to deliver 400+ horsepower is its Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT). This technology can advance, or retard the timing on the double overhead camshafts. Providing such exact timing pays off in better fuel economy, increased responsiveness, and reduced emissions.

But the story doesn’t end with the engine.

Power’s transmitted to the pavement via either a six-speed automatic, or six-speed manual transmission. Suspension enhancements include stiffened stabilizer bars, and tuned springs and dampers. Brembo brakes and 19-inch alloys are available on the GT Package.

Six-cylinder Mustangs haven’t been neglected either. Output has been increased to 300 horsepower, with available GT suspension. A substantial insurance saving, and projected 30 mpg (U.S.) makes the V6 a really compelling package.

Motorsports enthusiasts will welcome the return of “The Boss”. A tribute to the 1970 Parnelli Jones Trans Am Mustang, the bright orange 302R is basically a turn-key race car that can be ordered from any Ford dealership. Powered by a modified version of the new 5.0 engine, the fully-caged 302R rides on BBS rims with Brembo brakes and two-way adjustable Koni shocks. Production is limited to 50 cars.

As for the Canadian angle - the new 5.0 litre engine is built at the Essex, Windsor plant in Ontario.
