Audi flagship relaunched

Casares, Spain — Now in its third generation, the 2011 Audi A8 takes on the ultra-competitive full-size luxury sedan market sporting a complete redesign with more power, better efficiency, improved technologies like the Multi Media Interface (MMI), and new ones like mobile broadband internet access and location-based Google nanny services (currently available only in Europe).

Suitors will have a choice between the normal wheelbase and longer A8 L, which currently accounts for 90% of A8 sales. It’s worth noting the wheelbase (2,992 mm) on the third-gen A8 is nearly as long as that of the outgoing A8 L (3,074 mm).

All 2011 Audi A8s bound for Canada will have the 4.2-litre FSI engine that makes 372 hp at 6,800 rpm. Paired with the new eight-speed Tiptronic with DSP and sport program, combined fuel economy improves to 9.5 litres per 100 km. All new A8s come with Audi’s formidable Quattro all-wheel drive system and a self-locking centre differential to regulate the 328 lb.-ft. of torque 3,500 rpm from back to front.

The A8 handles well for a hefty 1.8-tonne saloon, thanks to its adaptive air suspension system with continuous damping control and three-stage height control, which offers a good combination of comfort and sportiness with a ride less harsh than that of its predecessor.

The default “Auto” mode automatically lowers the lightweight Aluminum Space Frame by 20 mm when cruising above 120 km/h for more than 30 seconds, to minimize drag and maximize fuel economy. Other available modes include Comfort, Dynamic and Lift, each with different ride height and stiffness settings that can be called-up on the touchscreen interface.

The speed-dependent power-steering is direct, though does lack a bit of feeling when in the default mode. Putting the ECU into sport mode, however, seems to cure this. Sport mode also holds gears longer to 6,000 rpm and quickens throttle response.

The interior exudes luxury and quality with an abundance of soft Valcona leather upholstery complemented by real ash wood and brushed aluminum trims. The front seats feature 12-way electric adjustability with memory, heat and cooling functions. Rear passengers get electric window blinds on all rear glass for privacy or shade plus generous amounts of head and legroom, reclining rear seats and optional four-zone climate control and Alcantara headliner.

The gear shift has been redesigned to be more compact and ergonomic than before. It sits lower to the well-appointed console and allows access to sport mode. Nearby is the new MMI touch-pad feature, which allows users to input characters onto a tiny touch-pad near the shifter using their fingertip instead of more traditional touch-screen, button-press or dial-turn methods, to access phone and navigation functions.

The driver information display is, well, vast and nestles neatly between the analog 300 km/h speedo and 8K redline tach gauges where the driver can easily access navigation, music, phone and other important information. There are shift paddles on the multifunction steering wheel too, along with redundant controls for the killer Bang & Olufsen advanced audio package that boasts 19 speakers and 1,400 watts of power.

Besides a long list of advanced safety features, LED headlights come standard on the 2011 Audi A8. Some of the new driver assistance systems include infrared night vision with pedestrian recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane monitoring and blind spot warning systems, as well as front (with full automatic emergency braking) and rear pre-crash protection.

Pricing for the 2011 Audi A8 FSI Quattro will be very aggressive versus the current offerings. There are no details on a long wheelbase model to report, though sources say a front-wheel drive model will be available. And don’t be surprised if a hybrid enters the mix at some point. We’ll have to wait until 2010’s third quarter before new A8s begin arriving in Canadian showrooms.
