Cadillac plugs into the future

Unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the XTS Platinum Concept hints at the new full-sized Cadillac that will be coming along in the next year or so. It also sets the stage for Cadillac’s simplified trim level structure – the base model, a luxury Platinum series, and a performance “V” version.

True to a concept-to-reality model, the XTS Platinum Concept was designed from the inside out, to give future buyers a hint of what to expect in the production model. The concept also introduces a new direction to the look and function of entertainment, navigation and information systems.

Among the changes are extensive use of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (O-LED) displays in place of traditional gauges and screens, and the extension of the touchscreen display currently in use on CTS and XLR models, doing away with some of the button controls. The seating is premium leather with a new laser-etched suede and rear seat occupants enjoy traditional Cadillac room along with a host of connectivity and infotainment features.

Power (estimated at 350 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque) comes from Cadillac’s 3.6-litre V6 Direct Injection engine, paired with a plug-in hybrid system that allows the car to run on electricity around town and get electric assist on the highway. Lithium-ion batteries are can be charged in about five hours. All wheel drive, four disc anti-lock brakes, stability control and full-function traction control are all standard.

Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) provides luxury-quality ride in normal driving conditions and superior road-holding performance when called upon. Sensors at all four 20-inch wheels provide constant feedback to allow the system to make adjustments on the fly.

Depending on who you listen to, the XTS could replace both the STS and DTS sedans in Cadillac’s line-up when it goes into production in 2012, or it could move downstream and take on front-wheel/all-wheel operatives like the Acura TL Audi A4 and Lexus ES.

The car is rumoured to begin production in Oshawa, Ontario late in 2011 or early 2012, with prices and features to be finalized closer to launch.
