Nissan Juke is not just jive

Nissan has introduced an all-new small crossover SUV, the Juke, into the European market and plans to bring the diminutive ute to North America in fall 2010.

Premiered at the Geneva Motor Show, Juke was inspired by the Qazana concept designed to combine the attractive qualities of an SUV with those of a small hatchback. It bears a bit of resemblance to the larger Nissan Rouge and Murano, but has distinctive cues, including more of a “coupe” profile than its larger siblings.

Based on Renault’s B-car platform, Juke will come in front and all-wheel drive variations riding on front MacPherson struts and rear torsion beam (FWD models) or multi-links (AWD). The all-wheel drive system uses torque vectoring to supply torque to whichever wheel can use it best, defaulting to front wheel drive and capable of sending 50% of torque to the rear.

Three engines are available in Europe (a diesel and two “petrol”), with one or both of the gasoline engines – 1.6-litre four-cylinder with normal aspiration and turbocharging - expected in North America. Power delivery is handled by either a five-speed manual or Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable unit with the 1.6L engine, or by a six-speed manual or CVT with manual mode in turbocharged models.

Inside, a wide centre console that was reportedly inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank is colour matched to the exterior colour. Though equipment levels are yet to be finalized, expect the usual complement of options – climate control, leather seating, rearview camera, push-button start and an all-in-one display and control centre.

Prices will be set closer to launch date.
