Chevy power takes on a heavy load

If you were to sum up Chevy trucks in one word, it would likely be “power”, and the new for 2011 Silverado Heavy Duty line-up makes power in spades with both an upgrade to the small block V8 and an a larger-still Duramax diesel V8.

The latter insures that Chevrolet’s new 2011 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD pickups deliver the segment’s best diesel power. A new, optional 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8 makes 397 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and a whopping 765 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1,600 rpm, marking improvements of 32 horsepower and 105 lb.-ft. of torque over last year’s model. Those figures drop to 335 hp and 685 lb.-ft. in chassis and box-delete models.

It all translates into a 9,072 kg (20,000 pounds) towing capacity for the Silverado 3500HD equipped with a fifth wheel.

Yet, the new 6.6L Duramax is also more fuel-efficient - up to 11% better on the highway than the outgoing model – and it reduces pollutants by up to 63%. The increased fuel efficiency combined with a new 136-litre fuel tank, translates into a range of up to 1,090 km on the highway. The chassis cab models (which now come with a standard Crew Cab instead of the previous generation’s extended cab) get dual fuel tanks for a 240 litre capacity.

If diesel isn’t your fuel of choice, you can stick with the standard Vortec 6.0-litre small-block V8, rated at 360 hp (at 5,400 rpm) and 380 lb.-ft. of torque (at 4,200 rpm). On chassis and box-deleted models, the horsepower figure drops to 335.

Enhanced for 2011 with greater idle refinement, the new engine also supplies 90% of its peak torque (342 lb.-ft.+) from only 2,000 rpm. The engine’s low-friction overhead valve configuration and cam phasing enhances fuel economy.

Both engines are controlled by six-speed automatics (an Allison 1000 with the Duramax; a Hydra-Matic 6L90 with the Vortec).

But of course, you have to be comfortable in your truck. To that end, customers will find the cabs (regular, extended and crew) comfortable, quiet and designed for work, with numerous storage compartments for everything from work gloves to laptops. And for those whose trucks are their offices, Silverado HD features available mobile WiFi, USB connectivity, Bluetooth, satellite radio, navigation system (with real time traffic updates) and multiple charge points to enable several electronic devices to operate simultaneously.
