Big news for mini minivan

The all-new Mazda5 (known as the Mazda Premacy in Japan) made its world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, showing off its interpretation of Mazda’s dynamic and elegant design language.

The new Mazda5 is the first production model to fully adopt Mazda’s Nagare (meaning “flow” in Japanese) direction, which reportedly finds inspiration in the beauty of natural flows (the wind swept dune; the cascading rapids; all that feel-good stuff). The Nagare design has appeared in certain elements of recent production Mazdas and has been showcased through a series of concept cars. What it does is perhaps as important as what it looks like and in the new Mazda5, it translates into excellent aerodynamic characteristics - outstanding drag coefficient and lift balance.

The new Mazda5 again offers a high level of functionality, with dual sliding rear doors and multiple seat arrangements, including the latest version of the karakuri middle row center seat that can be converted to a versatile storage space when not needed for passenger carrying.

A sportier and smoother ride provides the “zoom-zoom”, with the vehicle reportedly responding more precisely to the driver’s commands, for better ride comfort and handling security for the entire family.

Power comes from the 2.0-litre direct injected four-cylinder engine currently powering the Mazda3 sedan; replacing the current Mazda5’s 2.3L “four” it makes 148 hp (compared to the 2.3’s 153) with big improvements in fuel economy, of course. It is not known if the Mazda3 Sport’s 167-hp 2.5L four-cylinder will be offered. The wagon is expected to offer the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

In keeping with its debut location and European sensitivities, one of its biggest news about the 2.0L engine is that it emits approximately 15% less CO2 than the current model mostly due to the company’s “i-stop” idling system (a common feature on hybrid models, where the engine stops when the vehicle comes to a complete stop).

European sales of the all-new Mazda5 commence in fall 2010.
