MKZ: Lincoln’s first hybrid

Lincoln is aiming for the title of the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in North America, with the hybridization of its Lincoln MKZ sport sedan.

Making the hybrid version of the MKZ was a no-brainer, since Ford already had the Hybrid Fusion that shares a lot of MKZ’s components.

Introduction of the new MKZ Hybrid also complements Ford’s aggressive global electrification plan, which is aiming to have five new electrified vehicles on the road by 2013 - Transit Connect Electric in late 2010, the Focus Electric in 2011, a next-generation hybrid electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2012, followed by another next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2013.

The MKZ, nearest competitor is the smaller Lexus HS 250h, though the MKZ will reportedly beat that car’s fuel economy ratings, as well as equipment levels (more standard luxury and safety features).

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses Ford’s second-generation hybrid technology, made up of a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, coupled to an electric motor. The system provides net horsepower of 191 and can run the car on electric mode alone up to a speed of 75 km/h, or up to 3.2 km (two miles). Range is estimated at 1,125+ km (on a full tank).

And befitting the Lincoln brand, the MKZ Hybrid comes with a lengthy list of standard features and technologies, including: the SmartGauge with EcoGuide (to “coach” drivers on achieving top fuel efficiency), the Sync system, keyless entry keypad on the exterior of the driver’s door, blind spot assist and the MyKey system that allows programming of supplementary keys to control things such audio volume, car speed and seatbelt use.

In the luxury vein, items such as genuine wood trim, Bridge of Weir leather, power heated and cooled front seats, and parking assist are also standard, as are Ford’s capless fuel filler and the safety suite of airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners and occupant detection.
