Sportier Caddy rounds out CTS line

Cadillac is calling the new CTS Coupe the most dramatic of the brand’s designs to reach production, having been designed to become the centerpiece of the brand’s revised line-up.

The rear-wheel drive 2+2 coupe is obviously meant for performance with its sport-intended suspension, though it features such Cadillac-expected comfort and convenience features as a rear-view camera system. All-wheel drive is also available.

Standard power is supplied by a 3.6-litre direct injected V6 rated at 304 horsepower (227 kW). A high-performance V-Series edition of the Coupe will also be released in 2010, using a 556-hp version of the Corvette’s 6.2 supercharged V8. Power is delivered by a standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic that can be further optioned up with steering wheel shift buttons. Anti lock braking and GM’s StabiliTrak (stability control) systems are standard.

Besides unique transmissions to handle the massive engine’s power output, the CTS-V features Magnetic Ride Control (with sensors at each wheel “reading” the road every millisecond and making virtually instantaneous adjustments according to surface imperfections, speed and forces) for better precision in handling situations, performance Brembo brakes and paddle shifters for the auto transmission.

The coupe rides on a wheelbase identical to that of the CTS Sedan, but its overall length is 51 mm (about two inches) shorter and its overall height has been dropped also by 51 mm. Only the instrument panel and front console inside, and the nose and fenders outside are borrowed from the sedan. Unique exterior cues include the lack of pillar between front and rear windows and the absence of exterior door handles.

Inside, there are all the expected Cadillac trimmings with the accent being put on comfort. The steering wheel, shifter and seat inserts are covered in a micro-fibre fabric that provides the texture and feel of suede without suede’s inherent upkeep drawbacks.

The front seats are thinner than expected to enhance rear seat leg, knee and foot comfort, and can be optioned up with heating and cooling. OnStar is, of course, standard and now comes with flexible speech recognition (meaning you don’t have to say commands in a set pattern), which reportedly takes certain regional dialects into account.

Notable options include Bluetooth, pop-up navigation system, 40 GB hard drive storage with the ability to pause and replay live radio, 5.1 surround sound system, keyless entry and push button start, remote starting and a rearview camera.
