Caprice heralds G8 replacement

When General Motors decided to dump the Pontiac brand, it orphaned a couple good products, one of which was the new G8 – a rear-drive V8-powered sedan that was a good affordable match to the upscale European and Japanese marques.

At the time, it said a suitable replacement would join the Chevrolet brand and although nothing has been formally announced yet, it’s a good bet that it will likely share a good number of bits with the Caprice police package that is supposed to hit the highways and byways of the continent in spring 2011.

Like the G8, the Caprice PPV is based on the Australian made Holden Commodore, which also makes the Chevrolet Lumina for Middle Eastern and South African markets, so it took little effort to adapt it to the North American market even though it remain exclusive to the police vehicle segment.

Motivation is provided by a 6.0-litre V8 that provides 355 horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque controlled by a six-speed automatic transmission. A 2.92 axle ratio with limited slip is standard. It’s expected to power the big sedan to 100 km/h in about six seconds, and includes Active Fuel Management technology (which takes cylinders offline to save fuel during cruising situations) and flex fuel capabilities. StabiliTrak, GM’s electronic stability control technology, provides a “police performance” mode for enhanced stability during high-speed driving. A V6 is expected for the 2012 model year.

A long wheelbase and four wheel independent suspension provides exceptional handling and a comfortable ride. Eighteen inch wheels are standard police issue, though the plain steel wheels with centre hub cap would likely be replaced by alloy wheels in civilian guise.

The dash is specially designed to protect the required extensive police computer equipment in the event of a front end crash and subsequent front airbag deployment. Front side impact airbags and side air curtains are available. Two trunk mounted batteries provide separate power for the vehicle and its accessories.

In the Caprice PPV, the power adjustable driver’s seat is specially designed for heavy duty wear and to accommodate a holstered sidearm. Various technologies provide touch screen integration of systems, including a “Trap Speed” function that captures speed information when tracking or pacing other vehicles.
