Sport compact segment gets hybrid

After years of welcoming four-door hatchbacks, the hybrid market gets its first compact in the 2011 Lexus CT 200h.

As with other Lexus/Toyota hybrids, the CT gets an Atkinson cycle engine. In the CT, it’s a four-cylinder displacing 1.8 litres, with variable valve timing to aid in increasing horsepower and torque figures, while reducing fuel consumption. Power is supplemented by the Lexus Hybrid Drive system, which is basically two permanent magnet motors and a power split device all housed in a compact unit just ahead of a continuously variable transmission.

Four drive selectable drive modes (Normal, Eco, Sport and EV) allow drivers to tailor power delivery to economy desires and driving conditions - Eco mode adjusts throttle and air-conditioning settings for max economy; Sport mode adjusts throttle and steering for sportier performance, while reducing the intrusions of traction and stability systems; EV holds electric power only up to a mile distance or a set speed (usually parking lot speeds).

In addition to traction and stability control, antilock brakes, electric brake force distribution and brake assist are also standard. An adaptive cruise control system with pre-collision system is optional. Occupant protection is addressed by eight standard airbags (dual front, front side impact and front knee, and side air curtains).

A comfortable ride and stable handling are achieved through the use of improved front and rear body damping, and a custom suspension design of front dual wishbones with MacPherson struts and rear coils over shocks, with trailing arms.

The interior is clearly divided display and operational zones, with the Remote Touch, shift lever and steering wheel controls mounted close at hand, and the center console and display, and instrument cluster making up the information centres. The driver oriented interior is cloaked in NuLuxe synthetic that has the feeling of leather. Leather is available as an option.

Fold-flat rear seats, SmartAccess key system with push button start and an eight-way power driver’s seat are all standard. Premium sound, CD player, USB and AUX jacks, Bluetooth, satellite radio with traffic alerts and a backup camera are also standard.
