Range Rover power meets economy

Land Rover is calling the 2011 instalment of its premium luxury Range Rover the most capable and luxurious SUV in the world. And to some that might seem overly exuberant, for the company that for over 30 years has successfully blended luxury and ruggedness, it just seems to fit.

Probably the most notable feature is a new 4.4-litre turbodiesel V8 that puts out 309 horsepower and generates 516 lb.-ft. of torque (increases of 15.1% and 9.4%, respectively, over the model it replaces), while reducing the European-important CO2 emissions by 14%. Land Rover claims zero to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and 80 km/h to 120 km/h in around five seconds.

Brembo brakes (the same fitted on the Supercharged model) provide quick halts, thanks to 380 mm drilled front rotors and 365 mm units in the rear.

More important to North American owners, is a Euro-cycle combined economy rating of just 9.5 L/100km (an 18.5% improvement) or 30.1 miles per Imperial gallon (making it the first Range Rover to surpass the 30 mpg mark), though it has not yet been announced whether North Americans would get access to this “super-diesel” engine.

Canada does carry over the 5.0-litre V8 married to a six-speed automatic (introduced in 2010) that puts out 375 hp and 375 lb.-ft. of torque, and the supercharged 5.0 V8 whose 510 hp and 461 lb.-ft. take the vehicle on a 0-100 sprint of about six seconds.

A new eight-speed automatic transmission (unique to the new diesel engine) features idle control to further improve economy, and two significant Terrain Response upgrades are also part of the 2011 makeover, which includes subtle external re-styling.

Range Rover’s Terrain Response system now features Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration (hill descent) Control for improved traction and control especially in off-road situations.

Styling changes include unique grille and side vents for the diesel model, new colours and wheels, available illuminated door sill plates, new transmission controls and interior upgrades to the entertainment system. An exterior design option allows buyers to further individualize their 2011 Range Rovers.
