STI earns its wing

“For 2011 we’ve gone back to our roots – a no-compromise performance vehicle.”

The vehicle is the 2011 Impreza WRX STI. The speaker is Subaru Canada’s Peter Johnson.

Terrific roots; triumphant return.

STI looks fabulous and, in keeping with the “no-compromise” ideal, the big spoiler is back. It has a bit of an upward bow in the middle now, intended to help rearward visibility

The STI line-up now has two variants, four-door sedan and five-door, both with aggressive wide body design. Bumpers have been sharpened at the corners to emphasize the wide and low profile. The new grille has a black insert and blacked-out Subaru floating wing.

The smooth arch of the car’s profile is broken by a large vent just behind the front wheel. Its purpose is to draw air from the engine compartment and it’s not enough to upset the poised-for-action stance that makes you WANT to drive the car.

We’re at Calabogie Motorsport Park near Ottawa and we are about to get a taste of the new STI on what is arguably the best road course in the country – lots of blind turns and elevation changes to provide a test of the car’s ability.

The test cars are lined up in pit lane, their 305-horsepower four-cylinder turbo Boxer engines idling with a quiet, throaty, growl.

As I climb into the car, I’m embraced by the welcoming grip of the seat. Right there, front and centre, is the tachometer – right where it should be.

The shifter falls easily to hand, the clutch releases easily – and we’re off. Out of the pits and into a rising right hand corner into a blind crest and down into another right.

This car is fabulous. Poised. Quick. Stable. Powerful.

The Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) selector is in Sport Sharp (the other choices are Sport and Intelligent). It regulates the engine throttle mapping for ultra-quick throttle response. It seems you only have to think “go” and it’s going.

The multi-mode centre differential version of Subaru’s AWD system lets the driver vary the torque split more toward the rear wheels while multi-mode vehicle dynamic controls offers a choice of three settings: normal, traction and off.

Turn in is impressively sharp; brakes are terrific; there’s no squat and no dive. A new suspension system has minimized understeer and you really have to push it to wake up that particular monster.

STI is a confidence-inspiring automobile. And my lap times get quicker.

The air conditioning works well, too.

Four laps done and it’s time to come into the pits to await another cycle. While the car cools, I look around the interior, which comes in black and silver. The three-spoke tilt/telescope steering wheel features controls for Bluetooth, audio and cruise control.

A Sport-Tech package brings sunroof and a navigation system, among other features.

Prior to pounding STI around the track, we had the opportunity to tour some narrow, twisting local roads in the 2011 WRX which, while not as performance-oriented as STI, is still a blast to drive.

Things are a tad more sedate under the WRX hood where 2.5-litre Boxer puts out 265 horsepower and shifting is handled by a five-speed manual.

For 2011, WRX has been given the same wide-body treatment as STI, making the two stand out from the rest of the Impreza line.

In both models, the compactness of the double-wishbone rear suspension makes it possible to provide a spacious cargo compartment which can be expanded by dropping the 60/40 split/folding rear seat.

With rear seats up, the sedan can carry three golf bags while the five-door can accommodate two sets of clubs.

One thing is sure: either model will get you to the course in a hurry.
