Ranger soldiers on around the globe

As with several of Ford’s models, in the past there have been different versions of the Ford Ranger for North America and the rest of the world. A new version of the compact pickup for the rest of the world debuted at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

Due to declining sales in the segment, Ford has decided to drop Ranger in North America and concentrate pickup marketing on the full-sized F-Series.

About 90% the size of the current F-150, the new Ranger not only boosts towing capacity but also provides truck owners a safe and comfortable, feature-filled interior. Plus, Ford is promising a driving experience expected from a passenger car.

Depending on the market (180 across five continents), Ranger will be offered in three cab body styles (regular, extended and crew), rear wheel and 4x4 drivetrains (the latter with an electronic transfer case), two ride heights and up to five series.

The model differentiation will feature everything from bare bones, hose-out interiors to near luxury models with leather seating and a complete array of driver aids. The new pickup platform will also be used by Mazda for a B-Series replacement.

Power comes from a choice of new engines - a new 2.2-litre Ford Duratorq turbodiesel four-cylinder engine putting out 147 hp and generating 276 lb.-ft. of torque, a new 197-hp 3.2-litre inline five cylinder turbodiesel and a 163-hp 2.5-litre Duratec “four”, which can be configured to run on straight ethanol (for those markets that use it).

Five or six speed manuals and six-speed automatic transmissions are available across the board, with the automatic featuring grade logic control.

Among the new technologies are things usually found only in full sized pickups or upper scale vehicles – things such as Trailer Sway Control and Adaptive Load Control, Rearview Camera and Rear Park Assist. Antilock brakes with brake force distribution, electronic stability control, traction control and roll-over mitigation are standard.

Ford claims the all-new interior brings new levels of spaciousness to the compact pickup segment, with a new chassis and suspension (front strut/rear leaf) delivering a comfortable and quiet ride. Interior trim panels are designed to be easily substituted so that all parts fit the basic model, despite varying trim levels. Dashboards are designed to easily accept modular parts, such as radios, navigation systems and heating/ventilation controls.

Ample storage is provided for all sizes of take along items, including cubbies for cell phones and pocket change, door pockets that can hold water bottles, a deep centre console with a cooling feature and a glove box that can hold a laptop computer. Additional storage cubbies can be found underneath the rear seats on models that have them.
