Ford sees MAX return on new Focus

With its new C-MAX, Ford is hoping to capitalize on family needs of transporting an extended family or a lot of cargo, within the confines of a fuel-efficient vehicle.

Based off the Ford Focus, C-MAX is similar in size and scope to the Mazda5 (itself recently redesigned for the 2012 model year). The car is the next step in Ford’s strategy to deliver at least 10 new vehicles based on a single C-sector platform by 2012.

Search available options for the 2012 Ford C-MAX.

C-MAX uses a 5+2 seating configuration, with a three position middle row of seats whose centre section can tuck under the right outboard seat to create individual middle bucket seats. The outboard seats also tip and slide for access to the rear two-position bench. Middle seats also recline for long-trip comfort and the third row can be deleted.

Leather seating is one of the few options, as is the “mood” ambient lighting system that allows front seat passengers to change the colour lighting of the foot wells and various bits of lighted trim (such as in the cupholders).

Cargo space tops out at 1,988 litres (70.2 cubic feet) when only the front seats are in use, making the C-MAX interior about as roomy for cargo as that of the Escape compact sport utility vehicle, though C-MAX sits some three inches closer to the ground (with a three-inch lower roof that’s almost all glass front to rear).

Another ingenious feature is a hands-free power liftgate. When the driver approaches the wagon’s rear in possession of the vehicle’s keyless transponder fob, all he/she has to do is wave a foot under the rear bumper to trigger the opening sequence.

Power is supplied by a standard 168-hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, with a new all-aluminum 180 hp direct injected 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine available later. Both engines feature variable camshaft timing and are mated to six speed automatics.

Electric steering assist, front MacPherson struts and multilink rear suspension, and torque vectoring control all combine to improve agility and stability during handling exercises.

As expected, C-MAX comes with the usual complement of technology, including Sync, MyKey and MyFord Touch, as well as push button start and self-parking assist (where the vehicle parks itself at the push of a button).

A navigation system and rear view camera are also part of what is expected to be an all-inclusive model, as are automatic temperature control, blind spot warnings and cross-traffic alert. Other safety features include stability control, full side air curtains and tire pressure monitors.
