Mazda2 takes on winter rec

Ontario is known for many great things, but it is not the first province that comes to mind when thinking about winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding. If you want big snow, it requires heading west to Alberta or British Columbia. Quebec is another option, but still not the same as gliding through fresh powder at Blackcomb or Whistler. Elevation has a significant impact on the concept of what it means to go downhill.

Search available options for the 2011 Mazda2.

For its part, Collingwood, Ontario offers excellent snow-covered mountains suitable for outdoor adventures of many kinds and here it was we found ourselves spending a few days enjoying a white washed winter wonderland.

Equally exciting is the three and a half hour ride to this resort town in a 2011 Mazda2. Featuring a stellar outer design, excellent seating for four and enough features to embrace the notion this is more than just a cute commuter car, it proves having fun is as much about attitude as it is your physical surroundings. With that in mind, Collingwood and the Mazda2 seemed a match made in heaven.

Engine performance comes in the form of a 1.5-litre DOHC VVT 16-valve four-cylinder engine. Power numbers indicate 100 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 98 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

Mated to a smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission, fuel economy is rated at 6.8 and 5.6 L/100 km (city/highway). Chose the four-speed automatic transmission and ratings are still excellent at 7.5 and 6.0, respectively.

Short front and rear overhangs define the exterior shape. Trimmed corners keep body mass to a minimum. A distinctive, rising body line runs from the front fender arches to the rear shoulder of the Mazda2. This gives the car a sense of motion even at a standstill, enhancing sportiness by providing sharp definition from top to bottom.

Driving the new Mazda2 through the backcountry roads near Collingwood provides excellent insight into why this Japanese automaker is so revered when it comes to building small cars. It hugs snow-covered roads with athletic prowess, requiring little input to control our passing even as the road turns icy.

Front MacPherson struts and a torsion-beam rear axle deliver excellent road feel as does the engine-rpm-sensing variable power assist steering. Equipped with winter tires, I take snow banked corners at speed, four-wheel skiing of a sort. The new Mazda2 inspires confidence as we slip and slide our way uphill and down. No toboggan has ever been this comfortable.

The five year old Westin Trillium House offers elegant accommodations in the heart of Blue Mountain, Ontario. It features a total of 222 well-appointed guest rooms and suites spread throughout a gracious wood and natural stone setting. Grand in every way, it impresses as we arrive under the open timber frame canopy to drop our bags, skis and full assortment of warm clothing prior to check-in.

Superb amenities abound as every room features flat screen TVs, high-speed internet connectivity, signature Heavenly Beds, Heavenly Bath and Shower plus a gas fireplace to stay warm during cold winter evenings. It also includes the necessary elements for stress-free family travel such as a kitchen or kitchenette with fridge, sink and microwave.

Dining options include the Lobby Bar overlooking the spacious heated outdoor pool and a surplus of mouth-watering eateries at nearby The Village at Blue. Of particular note, the Oliver & Bonacini café grille serves exquisite breakfast, lunch and dinner in any season.

Year-round recreational activities include the Plunge Aquatic Center featuring indoor/outdoor pools, hot tubs, rope swings and more. It’s the perfect place to warm up after a long day on the slopes.

Leaving the mountain behind for the night, I am once again impressed by the interior appointments found in the Mazda2. Driving the GS model, a three-spoke, thick rimmed steering wheel houses features that include volume adjustment for the stereo and cruise control. The gauges beyond are rounded white on black with easy to read numbers.

The central HVAC system highlights round dials and turn knobs arranged horizontally below the AM/FM/CD player with MP3 capability. Airflow is surprisingly strong given the small dimensions of both the vehicle and the engine. Freezing cold hands and feet are soon toasty warm as we leave the slopes and head back to the hotel. All we need now is a crackling fire and hot chocolate to complete this magical Winterlude.
