Making a good thing better

TENERIFE, Spain - I have never really been a big fan of ‘facelifts’ or ‘mid-life refreshes’ of a particular model, as quite often the changes are superficial, at best. However, Mercedes has taken a sizeable swing at its popular SLK models, and this has caused me to look differently at how good a mid-life refresh can be when done properly.

Search available trim options for the 2011 Mercedes Benz SLK-Class.

The SLK, now in its third generation, has had a facelift with new front and rear-end bodywork design, which brings the front in line with the next generation of Mercedes faces.

Stealing the show on the new SLK is the really, really trick world premiere of the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control, which switches between clear and opaque at the touch of a button. It is one of the three convertible hardtop options, with the other two being a car colour roof or a tinted glass option.

With the roof set on its darkest setting, it is very effective in keeping the interior of the car cool when parked on hot sunny days.

It’s not all about the roof though; a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the SLK250 and a normally aspirated six-cylinder in the SLK 350 both feature Mercedes Benz ECO start/stop function, which makes them roughly 25% more economical than the previous generation. Canada gets the new SLK350 first, then the SLK250 later in summer 2011 with the new SLK55 AMG likely to accompany it.

The main difference between the SLK and its competitors, though, is the air scarf - a brilliantly simple device that blows hot air on the back of your neck at the push of a button. Most people who buy convertibles do so because they like to drive with the top down as often as possible. I go from the sandy beaches of the south coast of this Canary Island to the snow-covered observatory 2200 metres up, with the roof down the entire trip. With the airscarf, I don’t even notice how cold it is ‘outside’.

Also enhanced is the list of standard features on the SLK, which now most notably includes the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. Also included are Attention Assist, adaptive brake lights, neck pro head restraints, electric parking brake, head airbags in the doors, LED taillights, air conditioning, tire pressure monitors and brushed aluminum trim for even the base model.

New options include ambient lighting, AMG Sports package, a really cool Analogue clock on the dashboard, and the soon to be very popular COMAND Online with Internet access.

The new Dynamic Handling package with adaptive damping, Torque Vectoring Brake and Direct-Steer system makes the car really come alive. Now, don’t get me wrong, the regular SLK350 is a good handling, well balanced car, but having the option to use the sport mode makes it just that much better. And really, in a car like this you want the ability to be able to choose your driving needs at the push of a button.

So, how does it drive you ask?

Brilliantly; it is perfectly balanced even when pushed hard. The turn in is short and sharp, and the throttle response is very direct. The brakes have a great feel, and when there is a 1000 metre drop off one metre from your door, having the utmost confidence in the brakes is paramount. The seating position is easily tailored to fit most, and the whole package works very well together. It’s not overpowered or a rough riding canyon racer. It is just as nice to drive down by the beach or along the highway – it multitasks quite nicely.

When you factor in all the Mercedes Benz safety systems, reliability and engineering, you be hard pressed to find a better alternative than what Mercedes offers in the SLK line-up. It’s a bit nicer to look at, a bit nicer to drive, a bit more fuel efficient, and a bit more fun.

Not bad for a facelift eh?
