Nissan offers less Versa with more stuff

Nissan is touting the 2012 Versa sedan as the intelligent little car with sensible room and pricing. As Robert Downey Jr. would say “Innovation Within Reach.”

Built on Nissan’s new global V platform (V for versatile), the Versa sedan is small on the outside but big on the inside, says the company (which also claims refined styling, high quality interior and smart technology with next-generation efficiency).

“Compact cars are getting a lot of attention lately due to rising fuel costs and concerns about the environment. Yet many buyers are disappointed in what they find – vehicles rife with compromise,” says Judy Wheeler, Director of Marketing, Nissan Canada.

Knowing that entry-level vehicles are work tools for their owners – for commuting, errand running and transporting family and friends – Versa designers sought to combine five-passenger practicality with a high degree of comfort and an unexpected level of entertainment and connectivity features (Bluetooth, navigation system, satellite radio, iPod/USB interface, etc.).

The interior is rated at 2,548 litres (90 cubic feet), with a trunk adding another 419 litres (14.8 cu.ft.), and Nissan’s says the two are configured for real-world use with a 60/40 split folding seatback. The company claims rear legroom is greater than some mid-size sedans (and even some luxury cars such as the Lexus LS 460, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class).

The all new shape is in keeping with flowing curve stylistic renderings of recent introductions from Hyundai (most notably), with the nose bearing Nissan’s signature grille and jewelled headlights. The coefficient of drag is just 0.31.

Simplicity in manufacturing (which should translate into a lower price) was addressed by using 20% fewer components (which also helped reduce weight by 68 kg or 150 lbs. from the previous Versa), while retaining the previous generation’s wheelbase and overall width. The new model is slightly shorter in height and length, though it has a larger trunk (addressed at the other end by a shorter engine compartment).

Power is supplied by the second generation of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that uses two injectors per cylinder, continuously variable timing on intake and exhaust valves and new design piston tops and exhaust manifold. The result is better engine breathing, which improves power and economy. Power delivery to the front wheel is handled by either a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission.

Ride and handling are handled by front MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam in the rear, with stabilizers front and rear. Other standards include electric power steering, front disc/rear drum braking system with antilock system, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.

Other standard safety features include the usual complement of front, front-side impact and side air curtain airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and traction and stability control systems.

Built in Mexico, the 2012 Nissan Versa sedan goes on sale in late summer 2011. No word yet on a hatchback variant.
