Corvette power delivered to Camaro

"Ever since the Chevrolet Camaro was redesigned, speculation has run rampant that it was only a matter of time before a Z28 broke cover. The announcement of a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 therefore comes as both a victory and a disappointment."

However, since the LSA 6.2-litre supercharged V8 takes Camaro far beyond what Z28 ever was, and actually ties it quite closely to the Corvette ZR1 (which uses a more powerful version of the same engine), we’re thinking the disappointment probably faded by the time the car was unveiled to Camaro aficionados at the 2011 Camaro Nationals in Oshawa, Ont. (where Camaros are built). It will be the fastest production Camaro ever built, and we’re sure there are already aftermarketeers working on ways to make it faster.

“The ZL1 takes Camaro to all new levels of high-tech performance and design, offering a level of performance capability never before seen in this segment,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. “It’s only fitting that the most technically advanced Camaro ever, receives its name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history, the ZL1.”

In the Camaro ZL1, the supercharged V8 produces an estimated 550 horsepower and 550 lb.-ft. of torque, sending power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Driver selectable Magnetic Ride Control (with Tour and Sport modes) and electric power steering keep it all manageable, while advanced materials (including a vented carbon fibre hood insert) help keep the weight down in order to make the most of performance and handling.

Targeted at the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, the Camaro ZL1 similarly draws inspiration from a past performance model – actually, the all-aluminum racing engine installed in just 69 regular production 1969 Camaros – that has also achieved mythical status. The ZL1 badge appears on the grille, hood and brake callipers.

The exterior is meant to differentiate the ZL1 from the “ordinary” Camaro, but design differences actually serve functional purposes. For example, the front fascia and hood have air extractors meant to create downforce, and new rocker panels are meant to house 20-inch wheels and wide Goodyear Supercar F2 performance tires. For aesthetics, the centre piece of the hood is satin-finished carbon fibre and the bright exhaust tips enhance the reverberating exhaust note.

The all-black interior features power heated front leather seats (with ZL1 badged headrests) with microfiber suede inserts (also used as an instrument panel accent), head up display with unique performance readouts, alloy pedals and a redesigned steering wheel. Bluetooth, USB ports, rearview camera with rearview mirror display, and a Boston Acoustics premium audio system are all included.
