Saab crossover has roots in Cadillac

"One of the last things to come out of Saab’s affiliation with General Motors is the 2011 Saab 9-4X utility vehicle, which is based on the Cadillac SRX and built at the same factory in Mexico."

Like the latest Saab products, the 9-4X gets the Aero X concept look, and like its Cadillac cousin, it gets great on-road manners with the ability to tackle mild off-road challenges. It features Saab’s cross wheel drive (XWD) all-wheel drive system and Cadillac’s adaptive chassis. It can also be driven just by the front wheels.

The cargo area also gets the Cadillac developed U-track cargo securing system (with removable cleats that can adjust at various points along a track that starts at the back of the rear seats and curves just shy of the rear bumper. An adjustable fence fits into the track to keep cargo separated. There’s also underfloor storage and available power assist for the hatch door, which can be programmed to open to a lower height in order to avoid overhead obstacles.

The interior features the traditional Saab aircraft-inspired driver-focused wrap-around cockpit, which is finished in wood trim for the luxury feel (Aero models get a carbon-fibre effect). The start/stop button is located between the front seats (a long-standing Saab tradition) and the egg-crate like vents feature joy-stick like adjustments (another).

Electrical adjustment for the driver’s seat is standard, as is a 60/40 split folding rear bench with slight reclining manual adjustment for long-trip comfort. Standard sound is provided by a seven-speaker system, with the option to move up to 10-speaker Bose surround sound. The optional navigations system adds an eight-inch touchscreen and a 10 GB hard drive for music storage.

Rear passengers get their own climate control and a DVD entertainment system with dual eight-inch screens (in the back of the front seat head restraints) and Video inputs.

Power is provided by either a 265-hp 3.0-litre V6 or a 300-hp 2.8-litre V6 with twin scroll turbocharging (just in the top of the line Aero model), both controlled by a six-speed automatic with sequential shift (and optional paddle shifters).

The base wheel is alloy 18 inches in diameter, while the Aero model gets 20-inch alloys. The XWD system varies torque infinitely between the front and rear wheels (which are separated by an electronic limited slip differential to transfer up to 50% of torque one way or the other).

The DriveSense adaptive chassis uses real time damping to adjust to how the 9-4X is being driven, with the driver able to select between Intelligent, Comfort and Sport modes (as well as a separate Eco setting). The system has different maps for throttle response and transmission shift patterns, depending which setting is chosen.

Bi-xenon adaptive lighting up front is standard.
