Infiniti has always done things a little differently. Some ten years back, while Lexus was copying European sedans in order to gain quick acceptance, Infiniti was off experimenting with wind-cheating shapes and gaudy badges.

Infinitis were definitely not for everybody, and that was just fine with Nissan. Viewers and readers were more confused than curious by idioms of babbling brooks and rustling leaves. The axiom that Infiniti made great-driving cars was lost.

The top-of-the-line "Q" got a little side-tracked for a couple of generations -- becoming increasingly mainstream in its appearance and boring in its driving characteristics, but it's back with an alternative flair for 2002.

Infiniti's latest flagship boasts dramatic styling, luxurious interior and innovative technology, and backs it up with a healthy dose of performance.

The new "Q" is roughly the same size as its predecessor, but it's more aerodynamic in shape with immediate focus placed on the large, multi-lens projector high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights (the most powerful in the industry, right now). Like spectators at a European rally event, passers-by nearly step in front of the car trying to get a closer look.

Mind you, you can blow by them with the same aplomb thanks to a 340-hp V8 that is superior to all of its competitors -- it has 40 hp on the Audi A8, 50 on the Lexus LS430 and Jaguar XJ8, and 65 on the Mercedes S430. Its nearest rival is the new BMW 745 (15 fewer horses), and it's only outdone by performance variants like the Mercedes S55 AMG (349 horses), Audi S8 (360) and Jaguar XJR (370).

This Q apparently stands for quick. From zero, you reach 100 km/h in less than seven seconds, the standard 5-speed automatic smoothing out shiftpoints more easily than a continuously-variable transmission.

And it belies its size with compact-like handling. It probably shouldn't be surprising since the rear multi-link set-up was adapted from the legendary Nissan Skyline. Speed sensitive steering assist allows the driver to toss the Q45 into a corner with confidence. Lean is wonderfully controlled, and the combination of stability control and 225/55R17 tires (245/45R18 on Premium versions) does a wonderful job of holding on for dear life.

Yet, the interior is far from the barrenness of a NASCAR car. Rich natural materials and pristine displays (including the Infiniti signature centre-dash jewelled clock) greet occupants as they settle in. On Premium models, rear seats feature electrically adjustable, heated backrests. The centre console houses rear-seat HVAC and sound-system controls.

Everyday driving goes by at a whisper, and conversations between occupants can be carried out at the same level. Even when performance is urged, the car obliges willingly without infringing on occupant comfort.

Overall, everything this car does is carried out with the utmost quality … that's quality with a capital "Q".
