This is the sedan you buy when you've thrown out your futon and purchased a real bed. The Galant has subdued styling on the outside, but it benefits from an available 3.0 litre V6 engine, which produces 195 hp and 205 lbs.-ft. of torque. This gives the Galant lots of guts -- a light touch on the pedal, and you're easily up to 100 km/h. And the suspension is firm, not bouncy like your grandfather's luxury sedan. While handling felt natural and easy, I found the brakes a little too sensitive off the bat. But after a few lurches, I got the hang of it. The 2.4 litre inline-four puts out 140 hp and is a solid performer, but it works harder and lacks the punch of the V6.

The Galant base DE model comes with lots of standard features: air conditioning, power locks, dual front and back cupholders, to name a few, but I was a bit disappointed with the interior styling, even in the top GTZ trim level. Glossy houndstooth trim is not really my style, and how am I supposed to sip my grande mochaccino if the armrest partially blocks one of the front cupholders? Still, ample rear passenger space and trunk space are pluses. Will the Galant be able to hold its own against the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and Honda Accord? Time will tell, but it looks like a fair bet.

Pricing: From $23,097 for the DE base model to $33,287 for a fully-loaded GTZ.
