This is Mitsubishi's "crossover model." That means it combines the cargo-carrying versatility of an SUV with the handling and performance of a passenger car. It only takes a slight step up to get into the vehicle, which shows its passenger-car tendencies. Put it into drive, and it handles much like a car would on paved roads. It felt confident on the gravel road we took, but the attendants on the drive advised us that it is not meant for offroading. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models are available.

Power to the Outlander is supplied by a 2.4L transverse mounted inline-4 engine that produces 140 hp and 157 lbs.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm, and is mated to an electronically-controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with Sportronic shifting. While certainly competent, the Outlander's acceleration and handling didn't feel very spunky to me.

Inside, ample storage spaces complement a roomy cabin, with plenty of space in the front and back. The Outlander is loaded with features, such as standard air conditioning, power locks, power windows, keyless entry, reclining 60/40 rear seats, dual cupholders in front and rear, and even a charming quartz analog clock. The rear seats fold completely flat to maximize storage possibilities.

The Outlander comes in two trim levels, the LS and the XLS. While it should prove a solid competitor for other crossovers like the Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix, at first glance it was hard to find many outstanding qualities in the Outlander. Nothing Outlandish, you could say.

Pricing: From $26,757 for the LS base model to $28,697 for the fully-loaded XLS.
