First glimpse: 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder

The Eclipse is the sexiest model in the Mitsubishi lineup, and the Spyder convertible is even sexier because you can drive with the top down (the car's, not yours). It's the top-selling car in its class in the U.S., and it sure got my ex-boyfriend's shorts in a knot. This is a car you want to be seen in; we sure turned some heads driving around Montebello. It even looks fast when at a stop, thanks to side strafing that makes the car look as though it's in motion.

The base engine on the Eclipse is a 2.4L I-4 engine that puts out 147 horses and 142 lbs.-ft. of torque. But hey, this is a sports car, go for the 3.0 24-valve V6 . Two-hundred hp and 205 lb.-ft. torque is ample power to impress the ladies, and the Eclipse delivers a quick, smooth acceleration. Suspension is not as stiff as I expected, which makes the car feel more like a touring model -- I didn't get that "sports-car feel." It's a nice drive, but it's not fiery. This would be a good car to cruise around in -- it's easy to drive, and felt a little bigger than it was.

Big is not, however, a word I would use for the Spyder's back seat. A nearly 90 degree angle seat back and minimal leg room mean that you'd better be picking up very small hot people when you're cruising. And the Spyder GT's 210-watt stereo really suffers when the top is down, losing much of its bass. Trunk space is miniscule in the Spyder, and only a bit better in the coupe. But a definite plus was the low noise level when the Spyder's soft-top is up. I could hardly notice a difference with the coupe.

The Eclipse Spyder comes in two trim levels, GS and GT, and the coupe comes in three different trim levels, RS, GS, and GT. In other words: hot, hotter, and smokin'.

Pricing: From S23,857 for the base RS coupe model to $42,737 for a fully-loaded GT.
