First glimpse: 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

The Montero Sport is a mid-size SUV that's meant to exhibit an urban attitude. So you can go tearing around downtown before you head up to the cottage for the weekend.

Step into the Montero Sport and you feel like you're stepping into a truck, as opposed to the Outlander's distinctly car-like ambiance. There's lots of passenger space in the front and rear, as well as lots of storage options: cupholders in front and back, three overhead sunglasses/garage-door opener holders, pockets in the front doors as well as the cargo walls, and CD storage. So you either have plenty of places to store all those kinder toys, or plenty of places to store all those nightclub flyers.

Other standard interior features include air conditioning, power windows, doors, locks and mirrors, dual visor vanity mirrors, digital clock and of course, the 140-watt AM/FM/CD stereo system with either four or six speakers.

Cargo space is also plentiful; the Montero's rear seats fold flat, which lets you tote 79.3 cubic feet/2,246 litres of snowboarding gear/toddler accessories/shopping bags from Pottery Barn.

Driving the Montero Sport feels like driving an SUV. Driver position is much higher than in the Outlander, and the Montero felt like an SUV to me on paved roads. A 3.0L SOHC V6 that produces 165 hp and 186 lbs.ft. is standard in the ES base model and LS trim level, while the XLS and Limited models come equipped with a 3.5L SOCH V6 that provides 197 hp and 223 lbs.ft. of torque. All Montero Sport models come equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive (A4WD) that is supposed to automatically provide the appropriate traction for most on-road and light off-road situations. For heavy-duty off-roading, drivers can utilise the part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) in low or high range. The Montero Sport handled the off-road track at the Chateau Montebello's off-road track with confidence; at one point we were almost horizontally sideways, and the little Mitsubishi that could hung on and kept on truckin'.

Pricing: From $32,497 for the ES base model to $41, 937 for a fully-loaded Limited edition.
