Suzuki has always excelled at small vehicles, so it comes as no surprise that the latest Swift goes about its intended business as diligently as it does … even if it isn’t a Suzuki.

One of the biggest knocks against Suzuki over the years has been price, which is especially important in small-car segments since they are extremely price-sensitive and the costs are almost the same as for larger vehicles.

Luckily for Suzuki, its partner General Motors recently acquired Korea’s Daewoo, whose vehicles were some of the least expensive ever sold in Canada. One of the vehicles in the deal is an entry-level 5-door GM calls the Chevrolet Aveo and Suzuki calls Swift+.

The "plus" is meant to impress on buyers that this latest version of Swift is more than what the previous Swift was. Swifts always managed with 3-cylinder engines; this one has a "four". Swifts came in 3-door hatchbacks and 4-door sedans; this one blends those traits into one 5-door hatchback. Swifts were fuel-efficient, simple and stylish; this one is still simple but is more economical, more stylish, and more comfortable for more people.

The engine is smooth and efficient. Acceleration is not quick, mostly due to tall gearing of the 5-speed manual gearbox, which as a whole is a big disappointment. Suzuki manuals have always been tight and crisp, almost to the point of notchiness, but Daewoo manuals have always been loose and sloppy. This one is akin to swishing your spoon in a bowl of oatmeal. The automatic may be worth the $1,000 option price.

Inside, Swift+ isn’t roomy, but it’s comfortable. We managed to squeeze in four pre-teens and the only complaint was from the centre rear position, due to the hump down the middle. Upholstery looks durable and is easy to clean, and the seat padding looks as if it will hold up nicely through the years. Interior trim is not fancy, but again, looks as if it will weather time quite nicely.

Cargo room is enough for a couple of take-along bags, though the rear seatback does fold down in a 60/40 split. Flipping the folded seat forward (the bottom is not split) creates a flat floor to the rear of the front seats, which will easily accept four golf bags … mind you at this stage there’s only going to be two of you in the car …

The ride is firm and choppy due to the short wheelbase, but sound insulation is very good. Handling is virtually non-existent with skinny tires spinning at the least provocation, and the tall-boy cabin design imparts a feeling of top-heaviness. The steering is nicely assisted for easy parking and effortless turning.

Overall, Swift+ is what you’d expect in a sub-compact hatchback— tremendous economy, great versatility, tight interior and inexpensive materials. Don’t expect too much and you won’t be disappointed.
