Saturn rings in a winner

It would be wrong to call the Saturn ION Redline anything less than a fun, stylish, responsive car. It does, though, seem to straddle the line of being a fully-fledged performance sports coupe. It's easy to notice this simply by looking at or driving this car.

The ION Redline has a high level refinement to it, making it more driveable during everyday use, but fret not - this is still a blast to push around twists and turns on the open road. It has a little bit of a growl when you push up the RPMs, but it's nothing close to the in-your-face noise that comes from the Dodge SRT-4's exhaust. Same goes for the ION's low spoiler. Its five-speed manual shifter is responsive, but throws aren't as quick as in the Hyundai Tiburon.

I was surprised at how many second-looks it received from passers-by. There are a lot of eye-catching angles all over this ION, including the sharp-looking headlights and taillights, and the line running from the front door right up to the rear wheel. Just the side doors alone (which swing out, toward the trunk, similar to the Mazda RX-8) were enough to get "oohs" and "aahs" from many.

These doors serve to be more than just aesthetic. They allow for more space for backseat passengers, who in a typical two-door coupe would have a tough time getting into the racing-style seats. The front doors still have to be opened in order to open the back doors, but those sitting up front at least don't have to get out of the car. I was even able to help a friend transport several boxes during a recent moving day.

All gauges sit far from the driver, in the centre of the car, tilted to the left. It takes a bit of getting used to, especially at night when all you'll see in front of you is a sea of black.

A friend, after mentioning how nice the ION Redline was, added "but I don't know if I'd pay $27,000 for a Saturn." My reply? "Why not?" Most of the performance cars that come right from the factory are around that price, and the ION Redline can compete with or outperform any of its direct competition.

The SRT-4s and Tiburons have the edge it seems when it comes to outright sportiness, as the ION Redline has a few more road manners, but that's not a bad thing. Best of all, adding this day-to-day driveability really doesn't make this quad coupe any less fun to drive.
