Kia hatchback deserves a high 5

The seemingly always-improving Kia brand has already hit a home run in 2005 with its Spectra sedan. Now, brand new to the Kia lineup, is the 2005 Kia Spectra5 hatchback.

The question that begs to be asked is: did Kia just slap a "5" on the end of an existing car, give it a cookie-cutter look, and call it sportier and more fun, or is this hatchback the real deal? The answer is simple - the Spectra5 goes above and beyond expectations.

Kia delivered on its promise of a sportier-feeling vehicle. There's a tighter sport-tuned suspension for better handling, and a rousing five-speed manual transmission. It revs to the high RPMs very quickly. All kinds of exterior add-ons are available like front and rear body skirts to add to the visual punch of a great-looking vehicle.

The 5-speed is very fast, and the funnest moments in this hatchback occured during straightline acceleration. There's no unnecessary weight or bulkiness on this hatchback, so it's easy to get an instant response.

Kia is also one of the those car companies that seems to specialize in small cars that are big on interior space. Not once did I feel squished, even during extended driving periods. The sunroof was included in my tested version but this didn't hinder head room for a second. Leg and hiproom was also abundant. The only comfort issue was with the seats themselves. They were very supportive around the shoulders and legs, but the bottoms themselves were a little too firm for my liking.

Another reason to love the Spectra5 - the extras added in. Included standard in this hatchback are power remote locks, power windows, cruise control, heated mirrors and CD player. Not too shabby for something coming in at under $20,000 (it's an extra $2,000 for the 4-speed automatic).

It doesn't all end there. Just like the Spectra sedan, the Spectra hatchback comes standard with six airbags and there is the option for 4-wheel anti-lock disk brakes. In other words, safety is taken care of.

This car is brand new, and like most first-year models, the Spectra5 does show that it's not always perfect. Wind noise really seems to pick up at high speeds and the interior light is awkwardly placed.

All in all though, Kia has itself another diamond in the rough, plain and simple. The Spectra lineup alone gives it some great 2005 entries. Keep your eye out for this hatchback if you're looking for a reliable vehicle with some jump to it.
