Jeep has added a more-fun-than-expected little addition to the SUV market with the Liberty diesel. You can add a lot to the Liberty or keep things simple, but either way you'll be getting a fun little vehicle to take offroading or on daily errands.

The Liberty keeps passengers perched high up off the ground, making it easy to see everything. As expected with any Jeep vehicle, it has 4X4 capabilities. It's a little rough around the edges white manouvering around the city, but being as small as it is makes it easy to navigate around narrow streets, and rugged wheels and suspension make driving over potholes bearable, and almost fun in a twisted sort of way. Switching from 2WD to the 4WD settings isn't as easy a flick of a switch though. A large handle is used and must be raised or lowered.

The placement of some controls inside the Jeep make it somewhat quirky. Seat heater switches sit to the left and right of the driver's and front passenger's seat, respectively, and switches for rear passenger windows are found behind the front seats. This makes sense though and everything else can be found where expected and within easy reach of people of all shapes, sizes and heights.

The engine is very loud when you turn the key and while driving at slower speeds but settles down nicely once you accelerate.

There are a decent number of extras available in here. They're just not as in-your-face as other, luxury SUVs. There's no real wood or chrome trim to be found here, but I thought this helped with its rugged demeanour. The Liberty does have an available DVD-based navigation system (on the Renegade and Limited models), a hands-free voice-activated phone system and six-disc CD changer with six speakers. Be warned: the navigation screen is miniscule and many people could have a hard time reading it.

And as always, these extras really add up on a vehicle that is otherwise not outlandishly expensive (the top-of-the-line Limited has a base price of $32,440). Your best bet may be to pay the extra $2,000 for the diesel engine - you'll be saving a lot of money over time on gas.

If you're looking for more options and great off-road capabilites, this Jeep is just the thing for you. If you want an SUV more for the sake of owning an SUV, it might make more sense to go for some of the more entry-level sport utility vehicles out there.
