In this day and age where 'sport utility vehicles' focus much more on 'sport' than 'utility' (unless utility means more room to haul grocery bags and hockey equipment and bigger cup holders for a Tim Hortons extra large coffee), it's sometimes good to be reminded what an SUV can be all about - true, rugged offroad capabilities.

The Jeep TJ Unlimited Rubicon shines in one department - going offroad and taking you wherever you want to go, preferably if where you want to go is covered by mud, swamps, boulders ... well, you get the idea.

The TJ is a mess as a commuter vehicle. It will make your rear end raw from every little bump in the road. It will test your hearing when you get on the highway (is that what a tornado sounds like?). And it will test your motor skills every time you have to change gears on the awkward six-speed manual transmission.

Again, though, the TJ wasn't made for getting 9-to-5ers to their jobs every morning. It's for driving around on weekends in rough terrain. That being said, as much as I was cursing another drive home in rush hour one day, the skies opened up and Toronto saw one of the worst storms to hit it in a long, long time. Roads were washed away and destroyed (literally), major highways were flooded and man hole covers were lifted right out of their resting spots, but the TJ had nary a hiccup as I put it in four-wheel drive and drove confidently over the rain-washed streets. Now if it could only somehow fix broken traffic lights ...

And if you insist on using the TJ as an 'everyday' vehicle, there are some decent add-ons to the Unlimited trim level that make the commute a little more bearable (but not much). A CD player, cruise control and tilt steering wheel are no extra charge on this model.

If you're using it mostly as an off-roader, you're pretty much set. It houses an always-ready-to-please 4.0-litre 6-cylinder engine, full size spare tire, part-time four-wheel drive mode (it stays in two-wheel drive unless you switch it), high pressure gas-charged shocks, big tires with a rugged tread pattern, metal doors, and plenty more.

The TJ Rubicon is a rugged, brawny vehicle wrapped up in a small package. It vigorously goes through anything and everything you can throw at it. If you're looking for a true, honest-to-goodness off roader, the TJ should be near the top of your list.
