Suzuki's Grand Vitara is brand-spankin' new for 2006, with a completely redesigned interior and exterior and a new standard V6 engine along with 4X4 capabilities.

Visually, it does little to stand apart from the plethora of small sport utility vehicles on the market right now (despite the redesign), but look at it on paper and drive it on the road and credit must be given where credit is due.

The new Grand Vitara seats five comfortably and in typical Suzuki fashion, has a wonderful, clean-looking interior with all controls laid out quite nicely.

The exterior is just as clean and high-quality looking - definitely on-par with the RAV4s and CR-Vs of the automotive world.

It has great power output that should keep anyone happy, along with a nice, smooth five-speed automatic transmission (manual is standard) that should keep drivers even happier.

There is plenty of standard equipment on the Grand Vitara as well. It's available in three trim levels - JA, JX and JLX. The lowest-priced JA comes sans air conditioning and with a manual transmission for about $24,500. What it does give you, though, are remote power locks, an audio system that plays CDs and XM Satellite radio (the first Suzuki that will play satellite radio), a computer showing instantaneous fuel consumption, ABS brakes, six airbags, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and 16" tires.

Our tester was the JLX with cloth seat fabric which felt great. It included everything mentioned above as well as cruise control, a 7-speaker stereo system, a keyless fob entry system (how many other vehicles in the is segment and price range can boast that?), sunroof, six-disc CD changer and leather-covered steering wheel.

The price is right for all of this too. Add leather seats to the JLX package and the most expensive Grand Vitara tops out at just under $30,000. Similar vehicles such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, which are similar in size and have 4X4 drivetrains and V6 engines, can top out around $35,000 or more.

Suzuki may have the dark horse in the crowded small SUV segment but we have no qualms in giving the Grand Vitara a shining recommendation. There are really no glaring problems with it - and in hindsight, we were looking less and less at finding its negatives, and just enjoying all the positives.
