The Chrysler 300 may have only been around since 2004 but I've driven several versions of it, from rear wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, Hemi-powered 300Cs - and now, after driving the least expensive 300 for the 2006 model year I can say without hesitation that this is still one of the best affordable sedans on the market right now.

The base 300 (drop the 'C' when there's no Hemi) is still a fun vehicle that features almost everything anyone could ever realistically need in a family sedan. Sure, there isn't earth-shattering power like in the V8 300C but its 3.5-litre V6 is still spirited and always up for some fun.

Best of all, you get the base 300 model for about $30,000. You could get a Honda Accord for the same price but there's not nearly as much room in it. You could get a base Volkswagen Passat but it features a 4-cylinder engine (it's turbocharged but still gets 50 less horsepower than the 300). Same goes for the Mazda6 sedan - if you want one around the same price, you'll have to settle for a 'four.'

There really weren't many changes between the 2005 and 2006 model years. One complaint is the standard automatic 4-speed transmission that is always given in any and every 300. Yes it's smooth but it's one of the few things that take the fun away from this car.

But some things aren't changed no matter what type of 300 you choose - the cabin is still whisper quiet and rear-wheel drive (like our tester) or not, it behaves wonderfully in all weather conditions. It's fun on dry roads thanks to its near 50/50 weight distribution but when the snow or rain starts to fall it doesn't falter for a moment.

And again, we're using the word 'base' a lot here, but that still includes standard equipment such as steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel (the 300 happens to be one of the most comfortable vehicles to sit in as a driver thanks partly to this), air conditioning, heated front seats, sunroof and power windows. Not to mention in terms of safety you also get Electronic Stability Program, anti-lock brakes and driver and front passenger air bags ... with options for front side air bags and front and rear side curtain air bags.

By now, we must sound like a broken record, but it's worth saying once more: the 300 is a fantastic car from top to bottom.
