Chrysler has to walk a fine line with its PT Cruiser, as changing it too much from year to year could alienate all the fans out there of its retro flavour.

So far, the company has done a great job of changing things up just enough to keep its little hatchback fresh. For 2006, it gets even more power and a great new interior. Here's hoping improved handling and fuel economy is next on Chrysler's shopping list of improvements.

The 2006 GT version gets an increase to 230-horsepower along with 245 lbs.-ft. of torque - more than enough to rocket this little guy to quick speeds with no effort whatsoever.

This year, the PT Cruiser also gets an exterior facelift to make it more on-par with other Chrysler vehicles - the headlights have a funky new design, a rear spoiler was added, as were options such as leather seats and 17" aluminum chrome wheels.

The interior, though, is where we found the most improvement. Chrysler redid the inside in a big way, with larger gauges, a less plastic-y look and the addition of another Chrysler staple, the analog clock, which sits right atop the centre stack. The cloth seats our PT had were very comfortable and it was easy to find a satisfying seating position - once again, another Chrysler trademark.

I still had a few complaints with the PT Cruiser. It's a small vehicle but in a lot of ways it just doesn't have the advantages that so many other small vehicles have. It has a notoriously big turning circle, it tends to lumber around corners (despite not being very heavy at all) and the rear cargo area leaves something to be desired; seats are easy to fold down but don't fold flat - I'm still waiting for the day when every vehicle has fold flat seats by default!!

The GT is the most expensive PT Cruiser available and includes a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It guzzled gas a lot faster than I would have expected (turbo or not), but all that extra power gave it a lot of pep. Unfortunately, the engine was quite loud and coupled with the fact that it sounded like a convertible on the highway with all the wind noise it let in, was very disappointing. Chrysler added foam and insulation to several parts of the 2006 PT Cruiser to reduce outside noise but it we didn't notice any real improvement over last year.

It's probably safe to say that a lot of people who buy the PT Cruiser do so simply because it has a unique look and they find it, well, cute. It's just as interesting and retro-looking this year and improves visually in many ways. I look forward a few years down the road to an even sportier PT Cruiser that drives more like sports car than a minivan.
